DaemonFC[m]MinceR that's one reason I listed every creditor I could possibly think of.May 25 00:00
DaemonFC[m]If the trustee found $1,000 of non exempt property, he'd have to split it proportionally, like two dozen ways.May 25 00:01
MinceRDaemonFC[m]: it also pays not to get too much in debt :>May 25 00:01
DaemonFC[m]All the creditors would each walk away with a few bucks.May 25 00:01
DaemonFC[m]MinceR Making them split whatever the trustee finds helps to deter them from appealing my filing on the grounds that I may have anything that's non exempt.May 25 00:02
DaemonFC[m]If you owe five creditors $50,000, they're more likely to object and ask the trustee to look harder to try to find non exempt assets than if you owe $100,000 to two dozen creditors.May 25 00:04
DaemonFC[m]MinceR: It's like, "If you object, you won't get anything, and even if you did, you'll have to share it with all of my creditors going back to 2001.".May 25 00:07
DaemonFC[m]Bankruptcy chaff.May 25 00:08
kingoffranceyes, there are celebrities who go bankrupt but want to say their million dollar sports car  is essential and off-limits,  i dont have one handy unfortunatelyMay 25 00:14
kingoffrancebut they make those claims, certainlyMay 25 00:15
DaemonFC[m]In a Chapter 13 you can keep that.May 25 00:22
DaemonFC[m]Chapter 13 is for higher income people. It's a debt repayment plan that just forces your creditors to accept a 5 year repayment with a lower interest rate.May 25 00:24
DaemonFC[m]MinceR: Seems like Fedora 31 is sort of a placeholder, which is probably why it's fairly stable.May 25 00:40
DaemonFC[m]The Coronavirus is probably implicated here, because the more disruptive changes all got pushed back to Fedora 32.May 25 00:40
DaemonFC[m]So it seems like a continuation of Fedora 30 that just bumps the compiler, GNOME, and a couple of other things.May 25 00:40
DaemonFC[m]They were going to turn on full link time optimization, but that got knocked back due to some last minute bugs that surfaced.May 25 00:41
DaemonFC[m]Of course, being Fedora they would turn it on with a completely new GCC series....May 25 00:42
DaemonFC[m]The fact that sanity prevailed is sort of unexpected, but hey, whatever.May 25 00:42
DaemonFC[m]If it was me, I probably would have waited for GCC 10.1 or 10.2 before thinking about doing flto.May 25 00:43
DaemonFC[m]That ended up being what happened.May 25 00:43
DaemonFC[m]Major new versions of GCC are known for having, errr, issues.May 25 00:43
DaemonFC[m]Most longterm stable distributions never use a GCC series ending in .0 for that reason.May 25 00:44
DaemonFC[m]All sort of horrible problems can turn up in the programs you compile with them.May 25 00:44
DaemonFC[m]It's actually kind of interesting that Clang is putting out better compiled code than it used to and it's actually becoming possible to backtrace crashes in it now, but GCC has been going in the other direction.May 25 00:45
DaemonFC[m]My major objection to swapping out GCC for Clang as the system compiler was security and the correctness of the compiled code, but with things moving the way they are, pretty soon the only objection will be the licensing issue with Clang/LLVM. But we already depend heavily on Clang/LLVM in the Free Software world. Consider that it's a hard dependency of Mesa because compiling shaders is something that LLVM is wellMay 25 00:47
DaemonFC[m]suited for that GCC isn't.May 25 00:47
DaemonFC[m]If we reach a point where Clang can produce better compiled code than GCC, I wouldn't be strongly opposed to Clang as the system compiler.May 25 00:48
DaemonFC[m]So far, that's not been the case, and if it was, more than one distribution that is maybe worth mentioning just because of the novelty of Clang as the system compiler would be shipping like this.May 25 00:49
DaemonFC[m]Very soon, it may be the case.May 25 00:49

-TechrightsBot-tr/#techrights-betanews.com | Linux-creator Linus Torvalds joins Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips in embracing AMD over IntelMay 25 05:11
schestowitz                  <blockquote>May 25 05:11
schestowitz                    <p>And so, I was quite delighted when Linus Sebastian of YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips (of whom I am a big fan) saw the light and began embracing AMD lately (despite his love for Intel). It was very neat to see AMD Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper processors being heralded by someone who is typically an Intel guy. Believe it or not, yet another Linus (no, not Linus van Pelt from Peanuts) is jumping to AMD, and this May 25 05:11
schestowitztime it is probably a bigger deal than Sebastian's current change of allegiance. You see, Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, is no longer using an Intel CPU on his main computer. Woah.</p></blockquote></li>May 25 05:11

No, I didn't switch to ARM yet, but I'm now rocking an AMD Threadripper 3970x. My 'allmodconfig' test builds are now three times faster than they used to be, which doesn't matter so much right now during the calming down period, but I will most May 25 05:11

DaemonFC[m]I was watching a video about how Prince of Persia was developed for the Apple II.May 25 18:59
DaemonFC[m]Apparently, it didn't have enough memory to have enemies in that version, so "Shadowman" was a hack involving cloning an object using a CPU instruction.May 25 19:00
DaemonFC[m]The Apple II had a lot of limitations that didn't really make it a great platform for game development, so it's surprising that he got this thing to work at all.May 25 19:04
CrystalMathi think the early PCs are the best for gamesMay 25 19:16
CrystalMathbut not modern PCsMay 25 19:16
CrystalMathwhy? because modern PCs kinda tempt you to think about graphics moreMay 25 19:17
CrystalMathwhereas it's better to have crappy graphics with an actual original gameMay 25 19:17
CrystalMathsome people try to emulate the old ways, butMay 25 19:17
CrystalMathpersonally for as long as you feel like you have infinite memory, it won't be that goodMay 25 19:17
CrystalMath*personally i thinkMay 25 19:17
CrystalMathyou need limitationsMay 25 19:18
CrystalMathironicallyMay 25 19:18
DaemonFC[m]Well, having no limitations encourages people to fill programs with things that take something away from the experience, and games are programs.May 25 19:22
DaemonFC[m]The limits encourage developers to think about what something is actually worth before they add it.May 25 19:22
DaemonFC[m]Even Microsoft. Remember how Windows 2000 was pretty straightforward and now we have a pile of mismatched user interfaces and several control panels and 5 terminals and just shit everywhere.May 25 19:23
psydreadWindows 2000 is the only version of Windows I actually liked using despite its obvious flawsMay 25 19:24
DaemonFC[m]I was told that the Classic Control Panel is there because of things like AutoIT scripts.May 25 19:25
DaemonFC[m]If they go to click on something and it's not there, the script just breaks.May 25 19:25
DaemonFC[m]I'm like "That's dumb."May 25 19:25
DaemonFC[m]Apparently, it's no longer possible to create a local user account that is not tied to a Microsoft account if the computer has an internet connection while you're setting Windows 10 up.May 25 19:28

DaemonFC[m]You have to disable the internet connection to set up a local account? That's stupid.May 25 19:31
XRevan86Even Android doesn't do that.May 25 19:31
XRevan86Setup Wizard allows to avoid setting up a Google account.May 25 19:32
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Microsoft really doesn't like the local account option existence.May 25 19:33
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: So they're trying to make sure the user won't use it unless they have to – which is when microsoft.com is inaccessible.May 25 19:34
DaemonFC[m]When I was using Windows and MSN/WLM, I blocked all of their ad servers in my HOSTS file.May 25 19:35
DaemonFC[m]The funny part is that one of the ads actually installed malware through MSN Messenger at one point.May 25 19:36
DaemonFC[m]I missed that ad because of my HOSTS file.May 25 19:36
MinceR25 195804 < CrystalMath> MinceR: if i had children i'd name my first son betamaxMay 25 19:36

DaemonFC[m]Sony was trying to rush it to market and they didn't  think that having enough room for a movie on the initial tapes was important at all.May 25 19:38
DaemonFC[m]There were some VHS movies that spanned two tapes, but there's been a few Blu Ray movies that have spanned two Blu Ray discs.May 25 19:38
CrystalMathbut VHS tapes can hold 4 hours on SP, 8 hours on LPMay 25 19:39

DaemonFC[m]SP is what most commercial movies were using.May 25 19:39
DaemonFC[m]If you were copying porn from the video store and just wanted to get as many as possible on one tape, you could use SLP.May 25 19:40
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: You could've used PidginMay 25 19:40
DaemonFC[m]Some VCRs had a method to detect commercials and pause the recording automatically.May 25 19:41
DaemonFC[m]Commercials usually have dynamic range compression so that the show you're watching sounds fine and then the commercial comes on and starts screaming at you.May 25 19:42
XRevan86What if it's a fake commercial?May 25 19:42
XRevan86ahMay 25 19:42
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: That sounds familiar :)May 25 19:42
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Will it stop recording a modern pop jingle?May 25 19:43
DaemonFC[m]I don't know.May 25 19:44
DaemonFC[m]My dad kept a VCR without Automatic Gain Control so that Macrovision wouldn't top him from recording movies and porn from the video store.May 25 19:45
DaemonFC[m]In fact, he had a lot of VCRs because he worked as an engineer at a major company that made them.May 25 19:46
DaemonFC[m]There were various devices that could remove the Macrovision signal that was designed to make Automatic Gain Control go crazy to screw up the video you were copying.May 25 19:46
DaemonFC[m]I don't know which ones worked.May 25 19:46
DaemonFC[m]XRevan86: When I bought a DVD player, I hooked it up to a VCR without Automatic Gain Control. Sometimes I'd rent movies on DVD and play them from the DVD player while recording them on SP on the VCR.May 25 19:47

XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Or you could make an iso and burn it?May 25 19:48

DaemonFC[m]Today I don't use optical storage media at all.May 25 19:49
DaemonFC[m]I've actually been using the same thumbdrives to install Fedora releases for about 8 or 9 years now.May 25 19:50
DaemonFC[m]I do a media check each time I put a new ISO on them to make sure it copied over properly to avoid nasty surprises.May 25 19:50
*XRevan86 haven't installed anything in a while.May 25 19:51

DaemonFC[m]*ofMay 25 19:51
XRevan86And for VPS' I clearly don't need any physical storage.May 25 19:52
DaemonFC[m]Well, there was a time where if you attempted to do an in place upgrade on Fedora, what you'd usually end up with was a completely broken mess that might not even boot up.May 25 19:52
DaemonFC[m]Historically, AMD has had more and nastier CPU bugs than Intel.May 25 19:53
MinceRso the same thing as you'd end up if you installed fedora :>May 25 19:53
scientesFDIV?May 25 19:53
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Historically, fglrx existed.May 25 19:54
DaemonFC[m]After the meltdown and spectre mess and the issues around hyperthreading, it not only really slows down the computer with all the mitigation the operating systems have to use, but it's not really even fixed with a guarantee even if you keep them on.May 25 19:54
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: I kinda missed those times by avoiding Fedora %)May 25 19:54
DaemonFC[m]In fact, the mitigation that landed to "fix" hyperthreading ended up being so bad that Linus Torvalds backed it out and suggested turning it off if your security needs were that high.May 25 19:55
DaemonFC[m]It ended up slowing down workloads more than turning hyperthreading off, which is what OpenBSD does by default now.May 25 19:55
MinceRQuake 1.08 wouldn't run on my AMD K5-PR100May 25 19:56

DaemonFC[m]It's not like running the last kernel without them forever is an option.May 25 19:56
DaemonFC[m]I mean you could, but it's a bad idea since tens of thousands of security holes that get patched later and don't rob performance would also go unfixed.May 25 19:57

DaemonFC[m]Famous last words.May 25 20:01
DaemonFC[m]Lots of things have changed and that's a perfectly good series of card to buy for Linux now, but FGLRX was nastier than hell.May 25 20:01
DaemonFC[m]I got it sort of working well enough to play Doom 3 at least.May 25 20:02
XRevan86MinceR: Ah, so you emulate AMD K5, and that fails now?May 25 20:02
DaemonFC[m]I ended up having to park my happy ass on a RHEL clone because AMD was so horrible about updating their driver for a kernel/X combination that wasn't old as shit that this was the only way to keep things working.May 25 20:03
psydreadI got those used Radeon 7000 cards, because I knew that the onboard SiS graphics were badly supported on LinuxMay 25 20:03
XRevan86MinceR: You needed to change the config a bit, oh noes %)May 25 20:03

XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Exactly.May 25 20:05
XRevan86I blew my chance.May 25 20:05
XRevan86In 2010.May 25 20:05
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: No, I'm pretty sure they sent out free discs.May 25 20:06

DaemonFC[m]Firefox on Linux has always had problems that it didn't have on other platforms.May 25 20:06
XRevan86Ah, you mean afterMay 25 20:06
XRevan86ah %)May 25 20:06
DaemonFC[m]They don't like to spend time making things work on Linux, so they just turn it off and give you this entirely third rate browser.May 25 20:07
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Well, considering the cost of shipping I bet they didn't want you to change your mindMay 25 20:07
DaemonFC[m]Linux is the only OS where Firefox is not only widely used, but almost always the default web browser.May 25 20:07
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Yes, I remember that being the case.May 25 20:07
DaemonFC[m]I'd hazard a guess that at some point, Linux will be the platform with the most Firefox users remaining.May 25 20:08
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: Not so sure about that.May 25 20:08
XRevan86unless you mean relatively speaking, but then it's already the caseMay 25 20:09
DaemonFC[m]Consider that non-Android, non-Chrome OS, Linux distributions are about 4-5% of desktop OS share and that Chrome and Edge are eating them alive on Windows, and that probably nobody on a Mac is going to install Firefox....May 25 20:09
XRevan86DaemonFC[m]: I saw a screenshot of macOS with Firefox once :DMay 25 20:09
XRevan86that totally disproves everything, yesMay 25 20:09
DaemonFC[m]In fact, if you open Edge and search "Firefox" or "Chrome", Microsoft has it set up to where it wags the finger and suggests your computer will explode if you don't use Edge.May 25 20:10
XRevan86and I don't mean firefox.comMay 25 20:10
