[01:08] Isambard_Prince It seems like it would be worth doing. [01:09] Isambard_Prince Like it or not, Ubuntu does have a lot of users. [01:09] Isambard_Prince I'll probably end up doing a short blog post about how to throw the Rust replacements for sudo and coreutils out at some point but as of now they do not affect me because Neon uses LTS. [01:10] Isambard_Prince If the Rust replacements are not directly compatible, not even close, then this will end badly. [01:10] Isambard_Prince It will just convince people that rely on Ubuntu that they really have learned nothing from pulling in things like Unity and libav. [01:11] Isambard_Prince And that this period of relative stability was not because Canonical realized the folly of bringing in buggy replacements for existing software. [01:30] Isambard_Prince There's some kind of "loyalty program" that Toast restaurants are doing now. [01:30] Isambard_Prince I'm sure that this is costing the restaurants even more money to use Toast as a payment processor for credit cards. [01:30] Isambard_Prince And I wonder if they opted into it. [01:31] Isambard_Prince schestowitz[TR2], One of the recommendations I made to the owner of that restaurant was to get rid of Square. [01:31] Isambard_Prince It's not appropriate for a business with his volume of credit card transactions. [01:31] Isambard_Prince About the only place the merchant wins with Square and Toast is that they give you a cheap credit card terminal. [01:31] Isambard_Prince But then the fees are higher, forever, so they get you worse over time. [01:32] Isambard_Prince You can easily trim off 1% of every transaction and put it back in your pocket instead of the payment processor, by opting for a traditional reader. [01:32] Isambard_Prince But it's a higher up front cost, but it's not that bad. [01:33] Isambard_Prince It's a disaster dealing with the credit card banks and payment processors as a merchant. [01:33] Isambard_Prince They can easily take 4-5% of your GROSS receipts if you're not careful. [01:34] Isambard_Prince Then it forces you to raise prices, then they get MORE, and your customers are mad at you. [01:34] Isambard_Prince Some restaurants are starting to go cash only in this area. [01:34] Isambard_Prince They just stick an ATM at the entrance in case you need money. [01:35] Isambard_Prince Illinois passed a State law that says that credit card banks can't charge interchange fees on the part of the bill that is tax or tips. [01:35] Isambard_Prince So the banks are suing us. [01:35] Isambard_Prince They'll lose. [01:35] Isambard_Prince But they're really angry because they know that's a lot of money. [01:36] Isambard_Prince So if you go to Walmart and like 10% of that bill is a sales tax, then the bank can't charge interchange on that part. [01:37] Isambard_Prince If you go to a restaurant and there's a 8% tax and you leave a $10 tip, then no interchange on that. So that adds up for the bank. If $3.20 was a tax and $10 was a tip, that's $13.20 that a bank can't charge 3% of to the merchant. So they lose like 37 cents on that receipt. But then you multiply that by an entire state with 13 million people in it. [01:39] Isambard_Prince schestowitz[TR2], I've been trying to save some money. I've got this app and it lets me order leftover restaurant food that they had at the end of the day. [01:39] Isambard_Prince So far I've only been displeased by one surprise bag. [01:40] Isambard_Prince IKEA's restaurant is even on here. The bag usually ends up being all the stuff I'd have ordered anyway. [17:52] Isambard_Prince Something's wrong when you have a million browser tabs open and a few have taken all the memory, and Linux decides to kill a chat program that's using 11 megabytes. [17:54] Isambard_Prince It did remind me to set browser.tabs.unloadonlowmemory to True. [17:54] Isambard_Prince It's been True on WINDOWS since Firefox 93. [17:54] Isambard_Prince But still off by default on Linux, so it'll run you out of memory and cause Linux to panic even though the feature does work. [17:54] Isambard_Prince :P [17:54] Isambard_Prince It's like they're TRYING to get us to use another browser, isn't it? [17:55] schestowitz[TR2] seems like systmd [17:55] schestowitz[TR2] with its oom [17:55] Isambard_Prince There's a possibility that you might lose unsaved forms in a tab. Brave has a better memory saver than Firefox browsers. [17:55] Isambard_Prince In Brave, you can say "Never do it on these sites, but the rest are fair game." [17:56] Isambard_Prince That way if you get tab unloads it won't be your important sites. It'll go after YouTube or something. [17:57] Isambard_Prince I feel like if browsers are going to consume wads of memory, they need to unload unused tabs, but they need to let you whitelist, or have some sort of heuristics like "Okay, we go after known pigs first like YouTube. There's an unsaved form over here so we only do that one if the computer is about to crash." [17:58] Isambard_Prince Crashing a Youtube tab to save the system is unlikely to cause harm. [17:58] Isambard_Prince You just reload the tab if you want to watch the video later. [17:58] Isambard_Prince The browser should have a list of sites to never unload. [17:59] Isambard_Prince Like, they know people are probably using online office software for a reason. Then it should check for unsaved forms, those are off limits unless things get really bad. [17:59] Isambard_Prince Then there should be "Okay, what's actually causing the problem, and we go from worst to best." [17:59] Isambard_Prince The goal should be the least annoyance for the user and the worst offender for RAM use. ● Dec 29 [18:00] Isambard_Prince You put them together and kill that way. [18:00] Isambard_Prince That's supposedly what the OOM tries to do. [18:00] Isambard_Prince HexChat is not a good target because it doesn't really free up anything. [18:02] Isambard_Prince You free up 11 MB? That's not even a large enough amount to store something else really. [18:02] Isambard_Prince 11 MB was a lot of memory, in 1992. [18:03] Isambard_Prince By 1998 even my Windows 98 system had 128 MB of RAM, which was a lot by then. Especially since I gutted the OS and purged Internet Explorer and all and put in the Windows 95 B shell. [18:03] Isambard_Prince I think the entire OS used like 10-11 MB of RAM on startup after that. [18:03] Isambard_Prince It solved a lot of the instability problems. [18:03] Isambard_Prince I installed all the remaining hotfixes that mattered. I could do months of uptime under Windows 98 like that. [18:09] Isambard_Prince You didn't need to be a college professor to rebut Bill Gates. [18:09] Isambard_Prince There was a simple utility called RoM II or RoM II SE depending on the version of Windows 98 you had. [18:09] Isambard_Prince You ran it, you gave it three files from the OEM service release of Windows 95. [18:10] Isambard_Prince You reboot, and there's the computer with no remnants of IE, Outlook Express, any of that garbage. [18:10] Isambard_Prince It was clean, like Windows 95 only with some bug fixes and better driver support and memory management. [18:11] Isambard_Prince There's just not a large difference with Windows 95 and 98. Almost all of the differences were IE. If you only did the parts that actually were an improvement it would be a very small delta. [18:11] Isambard_Prince It's not very user-facing other than that. [18:12] Isambard_Prince You can use WDM drivers, it has USB support, the memory manager can run code out of the disk cache. Some minor bug fixes. It can run a newer version of DirectX runtimes. It comes with some media codecs you could have added to Windows 95. [18:14] Isambard_Prince The improvements over Windows 98 were a better defrag tool, Notepad could handle more text in the buffer, better support for Unicode that could be added to Windows 98, and the TCP/IP stack from Windows 2000. [18:16] MinceR committing code into competing products to fuck them up, even more so [18:16] MinceR yeah, i remember that [18:16] Isambard_Prince It would check for programs doing dll stomping or replacing other system files, and it would let it happen, then do a switcheroo to replace them with the known good copy. [18:16] MinceR why implement filesystem access controls if you can instead implement a bloated hack that accomplishes nothing useful? [18:16] Isambard_Prince It did protect the OS, but it also made software that ran on Windows 95 and 98 fail to work. [18:17] Isambard_Prince Humorously, it did accidentally add some resilience to malware because some malware happened to replace system files and did not anticipate this.
