For the past two years, her work as a call center agent for outsourcing company Concentrix has been punctuated by people at the other end of the phone demanding to speak to a real human. Sometimes they ask her straight, Are you an AI? Other times they just start yelling commands: Speak to a representative! Spe [00:50] IsambardPrince ak to a representative! [00:50] IsambardPrince Lindsey, whose work involves selling and answering questions about credit cards for American Express, a Concentrix client, has developed her own tactics to try to calm customers. I tell them, I promise, Im a real human. To demonstrate, she might cough or giggle, vocal tics she believes AI cant replicate. I even ask them, Is there anything you want me to say to prove that Im a real human? [00:50] IsambardPrince This approach doesnt always work, she said. Skeptical customers are already frustrated from dealing with the automated system that triages calls before they reach a person. So when Lindsey starts reading from her AmEx-approved script, callers are infuriated by what they perceive to be another machine. They just end up yelling at me and hanging up, she said, leaving Lindsey sitting in her home office in Oklahoma, shocke [00:50] IsambardPrince d and sometimes in tears. Like, I cant believe I just got cut down at 9:30 in the morning because they had to deal with the AI before they got to me. [00:50] IsambardPrince Concentrix did not reply to a request for comment. [01:01] IsambardPrince 25 years ago there wasn't a whole lot else to do. [01:01] IsambardPrince You know, you're sitting there bored and watching MST3K. There is an outside, but it's a small town in Indiana surrounded by corn. [01:03] IsambardPrince MinceR, Have you seen that episode of Star Trek Voyager where they try to make the Q Continuum understandable by humans so they can show Janeway why Quinn wants to commit suicide? He represents it as a gas station and a corner store out in the middle of nowhere with a road that leads this way, and that way. Everyone is just sitting there. Some reading a book or something. A clock with no hands is on the wall. He said he's done [01:03] IsambardPrince everything, seen everything. He points to a dog laying in front of the store. He says "I was even the dog once." and Q says "We've all taken turns being the dog!" [01:04] IsambardPrince It's a good representation of being in Indiana. [01:04] IsambardPrince Except he can't die. [01:04] MinceR ew [01:04] IsambardPrince He just lives forever. He knows everything that can be known. He's seen everything that he can see, done everything he can do in the entire universe. [01:04] IsambardPrince And now he just gets to be bored, forever. [01:04] MinceR i suspect the small town in indiana is still a better place to be than fucking budapest [01:04] IsambardPrince And so the boredom becomes painful enough that he wants to die. [01:05] IsambardPrince MinceR, Yeah, it was better back then. [01:05] IsambardPrince That town was like living in a bubble where time doesn't really move. [01:05] IsambardPrince You don't notice the rest of the state too much. [01:06] IsambardPrince Everything's pretty boring. [01:06] IsambardPrince Well kept, but boring. [01:06] IsambardPrince Efficiently administered, but boring. [01:07] IsambardPrince MinceR, When I watched Jericho I imagined the small town I lived in at war with Marion. [01:07] IsambardPrince You remember that episode where they went to war with the next town over. [01:07] IsambardPrince And some of them had built mortars. [01:07] IsambardPrince :D [01:23] IsambardPrince MinceR, I was having trouble with the neighbors propping open the laundry room door and having a bunch of heat and humidity get through and come out near my apartment. So I rigged the magnet so it can't latch the door anymore unless someone pushes it back. Nobody has. That was a week ago. [01:23] IsambardPrince I thing the magnet was just catching it. For the same reason our reactors do not have containment buildings around them, like those in the West. For the same reason we don't use properly enriched fuel in our cores. For the same reason we are the only nation that builds water-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors with a positive void coefficient. [01:54] IsambardPrince [pause] [01:54] IsambardPrince Valery Legasov: It's cheaper. [01:54] IsambardPrince :0 [01:56] IsambardPrince MinceR, I loved that speech at the end of the series. [01:56] IsambardPrince It WOULD be cheaper to run an RBMK reactor.... [01:56] IsambardPrince Except that one exploded and caused the most expensive disaster in history, due to design flaws and corner cutting. [01:58] IsambardPrince Trump's tariffs are not actually creating steel jobs if companies and consumers avoid steel now entirely because it costs too much. [01:58] IsambardPrince But try explaining economics to Trump or anyone dumb enough to vote for Trump. [01:59] IsambardPrince What high steel prices do is create a huge gap between the cost of something that's made of steel and something made of another material. [01:59] IsambardPrince They create an incentive to avoid the tariff, not jobs in the steel industry. [10:10] IsambardPrince Most users will be fine with a desktop and a GPU that's good enough for desktop effects, accelerating videos, and so on. [10:10] IsambardPrince You need to compare Windows 10 and 11 and Linux on the same PC, and you'll see Windows 11 is the slowest of all of them. [10:10] itech you dont want your computer to feel too fast [10:11] IsambardPrince Even when I used Windows, I often downgraded it to the older version. [10:11] IsambardPrince I had PCs that came with Windows XP that for whatever reason, I stuck Windows 98 and Windows 2000 on them. [10:11] IsambardPrince Even Windows 98 on Pentium 4 era systems that Intel said it couldn't run on. [10:12] IsambardPrince It turned out the only block for the drivers was they added detection for Windows 98 and popped up a fake error message. [10:12] IsambardPrince The WDM chipset drivers worked fine. You rebooted, all the hardware came up./ [10:12] IsambardPrince Then it was just run RoM II and have it rip out MSIE and all the other garbage, install the Nvidia driver. [10:13] IsambardPrince Yes, I even got Halo 2 for "Vista" to work on Windows 98, but it took some doing. [10:13] vanveldt All of that do not account for the fact that the default Microsoft apps are technically webapps [10:14] IsambardPrince The 2006 redist of DirectX 9.0c, KernelEx, the Halo 2 "XP" community patch that ripped out all the garbage that tested for Vista's kernel and the deliberate crash Microsoft planted halfway into the game. [10:14] IsambardPrince I also had to dll stomp the Games for Windows Live dll with a broken dummy. [10:15] IsambardPrince But in the end, it actually worked. [10:15] IsambardPrince I think what schestowitz[TR3] means is that the problems users run into today are not even necessarily about Microsoft at all. [10:16] IsambardPrince Microsoft is THAT irrelevant that when you run into a problem, they're not even the problem anymore. [10:16] vanveldt MS won't consider it is their problem even when they are to blame for it [10:27] *IsambardPrince has quit (connection closed) ● Jun 30 [11:31] TR News "GPD has shared early information about the MicroPC 2 on Indiegogo, describing it as an updated version of its ultra-compact computer for mobile technical tasks and on-site troubleshooting." https://linuxgizmos.com/gpd-micropc-2-with-intel-n250-brings-multi-port-connectivity-to-ultra-mobile-design/ | Source: Linux Gizmos [11:31] TR Bot ( status 520 @ https://linuxgizmos.com/gpd-micropc-2-with-intel-n250-brings-multi-port-connectivity-to-ultra-mobile-design/ ) [11:31] TR News "This week, Orange Pi previewed its upcoming Orange Pi Nova, a single-board computer developed in collaboration with Loongson." https://linuxgizmos.com/orange-pi-nova-teased-with-loongson-2k3000-as-loongson-expands-product-line/ | Source: Linux Gizmos [11:31] TR Bot ( status 520 @ https://linuxgizmos.com/orange-pi-nova-teased-with-loongson-2k3000-as-loongson-expands-product-line/ ) [11:32] TR News zurichess UCI chess engine https://www.linuxlinks.com/zurichess-uci-chess-engine/ [11:32] TR Bot - UCI chess engine - LinuxLinks [11:33] TR News "People have been talking about switching from Windows to Linux since the 1990s, but in the world of open-source operating systems, there is much more variety than just the hundreds of flavors of Linux-based operating systems today." https://hackaday.com/2025/06/29/switching-from-desktop-linux-to-freebsd/ | Source: Hackaday [11:33] TR Bot From Desktop Linux To FreeBSD | Hackaday [11:38] TR News "Its a tumultuous time for copyright in the United States, with dozens of potentially economy-shaking AI copyright lawsuits winding through the courts." https://www.wired.com/story/us-copyright-office-chaos-doge/ | Source: Wired [11:38] TR Bot One Is in Charge at the US Copyright Office | WIRED [11:38] TR News "Thats a hell of a position to take in a debate where a central issue is consent. [22:15] IsambardPrince Pretty obvious. [22:15] IsambardPrince You raise the price of the console and games by 30% when they were already "salty". [22:15] IsambardPrince You get less demand. [22:15] IsambardPrince You don't bring in more money because demand falls. [22:16] IsambardPrince It's the same with most any product you don't need in order to live. [22:16] IsambardPrince If food goes up 30% and there's no way around it, people buy food because hunger and starvation are awful. [22:16] IsambardPrince If the cost of a fire pit for your backyard goes up 25% at Walmart....they sell less fire pits. [22:17] IsambardPrince So they order 20% less of them to avoid unsold inventory they paid huge tariffs on. [22:17] IsambardPrince 20% less fire pits means 20% less employee hours to unload, stock, ring up, and carry out fire pits to someone's car. [22:18] IsambardPrince You have to be able to pivot to something that doesn't have a huge tariff and sell that instead. [22:18] IsambardPrince So you might be able to sell plastic mixing bowls, but not stainless steel. [22:18] IsambardPrince If plastic bowl sets go up $1 but the stainless steel goes up by $40.
