[02:35] XRevan86 Usually it's to fix a booting issue. [02:35] activelow DOS partitions do not have any of this problem, add to this normally i do not need any partition tables, but u-boot/kernel need it to place a root.squashfs into a firmware image (ISO for amd64, and some custom layout for arm64) [02:35] XRevan86 Ye know, for mortals. [02:36] activelow i have no booting issues [02:36] XRevan86 "DOS partitions do not have any of this problem" does the problem exist elsewhere? [02:36] activelow for amd64.iso it is legacy BIOS only required, and with arm64 it is u-boot which i refined firmware image assembly for, so i can extend the protection of my scambler-compression [02:36] XRevan86 There's no indication in the code. [02:49] MinceR XRevan86: by-uuid has different entries [02:49] activelow and with intel ME i am not willing to consider any of this anymore [02:49] leah when you get good at it, you know, in advance, how the solder will flow. and you can feel it in your head when doing it. you get to a point where you barely even need to look at what you're doing, because it just flows [02:50] activelow i would rather pick a Z80 UZI like Alan Cox did [02:50] activelow and then, have some fun :) [02:50] *mib_dpny56 (~6c1a2419@q8ban9vyag5t6.irc) has joined #techrights [02:50] XRevan86 MinceR: Oh, I think I know what's going on. [21:10] DaemonFC "Ensure that the Graphics Device is set to Discrete Graphics" [21:10] DaemonFC Shouldn't apply if all you have in there is Intel graphics. [21:10] DaemonFC Maybe this is one of those dual Intel/Nvidia shitfests. [21:11] DaemonFC Where it just completely falls apart because neither one of them have written proper hybrid graphics support, so the Nvidia one just stays on all the time and runs the battery down. [21:11] DaemonFC Hybrid graphics should be on the way out anyway. [21:12] DaemonFC Both AMD and Intel have upped their integrated graphics game and perform at least as well as lower to middle tier Nvidia chips that were in these hybrid setups. [21:12] DaemonFC Sooner or later, I don't think that Nvidia will be much of a thing on laptops. [21:13] DaemonFC I wish them bankruptcy and that the fleas of a thousand rabid camels infests their bedsheets and all of that good stuff. [21:13] DaemonFC They spent decades pretty much trying to undermine open graphics support on Linux that just works without any uphill battle on the part of the user, whether you give a damn that they're proprietary or not. [21:14] activelow main system memory data rate is very fast, ddr4; no need for power-hungry dedicated gpu memory [21:14] DaemonFC Yeah, that gives modern integrated graphics a major boost. They actually have three advantages. [21:14] activelow offloading opengl to dedicated GPU (either intel or external) isn't necessary anymore too, because AVX SIMD can do what opengl did [21:15] DaemonFC They're part of the processor, they have their own very fast dedicated cache RAM, and they have a direct pipe to the system memory. [21:15] *liberty_box has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s) [21:15] DaemonFC So when the cache RAM is full, or it needs to evict it and put something else in, it doesn't have to risk all the bottlenecks that discrete graphics might hit that would leave the display chunking along. [21:17] DaemonFC Bought a RadeonHD 5000 series to replace it. [21:17] DaemonFC And then I set up my own local git repo and forked the Linux kernel to bring in the latest graphics stuff and rebuild occasionally. [21:17] DaemonFC I set up a streamlined process to turn it into DEB packages for my computer and then install them. [21:18] DaemonFC So at the time I was operating Ubuntu on top of my own custom kernels. [21:18] DaemonFC Which obviously you can't do now unless you turn Secure Boot off. [21:18] activelow ideally vendor-specific drivers could be fully disabled and a fast generic framebuffer support existed (vesafb) [21:18] DaemonFC MinceR might get a kick out of this... [21:18] DaemonFC My custom kernels with all kinds of weird stuff in them actually were more stable than what Fedora does. [21:20] DaemonFC schestowitz-TR, One of the reasons I picked Debian 11 is because I can just bling bling userspace all I want with Flatpaks and the core system should just stay in place and not cause too many problems, and then when you figure out the problems, Fedora just fixes that (or doesn't) and then something else goes wrong. [21:21] DaemonFC The only seriously bad problem with Debian 11 was Intel's WiFi driver and it sounds like this spans multiple chipset models and even hits some people on Arch or Fedora 34. [21:21] DaemonFC So it's not one of those things that you could even count on going away soon, and the workaround is just disable AX mode on the router. [21:21] DaemonFC Force the WiFi chip to use code that doesn't lead to a kernel oops. [21:22] DaemonFC The same shit was happening in Windows. It just didn't log anything or alert the user. [21:22] DaemonFC In fact, their 3 line patch to fix one of the possible code path crashes, doesn't fix anything, it just doesn't put it in the system log as a serious error if you apply that patch. [21:23] DaemonFC So it will still glitch, but it won't alert the user that this particular bad code path is being hit. This is Intel. This is what they do. They can't figure it out and fix it, so they sweep it under the carpet. [22:03] DaemonFC In at least one case, heres another example of Intel not knowing how to fix their bugs and just hiding one, instead. This one is marked to be backported to LTS kernels. [22:03] DaemonFC This is Intels method of dealing with bugs. Theyll hide the kernel errors that their driver is causing and leave the user completely in the dark about what is happening. Before this patch is applied, youd get like six of these messages and then NetworkManager would tell you the signal dropped out, but then the iwlwifi driver will restart, and unless youre on a VPN that needs a reliable connection, and has a kill switch, [22:03] DaemonFC you are unlikely to even notice unless you see the blink-and-you-miss-it message from the NetworkManager. [22:04] DaemonFC Like Lenovos BIOS (uEFI) errors, Intels code is crap whether you run it on Windows or Linux, but Linux doesnt try to hide their mess as much, although it sounds like Intel is getting the better of Linux now too." [22:05] DaemonFC "F&@$ Intel. Im sorry that this isnt family friendly for a moment, but I wasted an entire afternoon trying to figure out what was happening to my WiFi. But hopefully, this post helps others so they dont have to shotgun potential solutions including turning the power management off, which apparently doesnt work, or using swcrypto, which puts the burden on the CPU for securing the link to the router, when the WiFi chi [22:05] DaemonFC p should be doing that, and also apparently doesnt stabilize anything. People are just throwing spaghetti at the wall because Intel knows it has problems and wont be honest with its customers. [22:05] DaemonFC At least there are error messages that lead the user to a potential resolution, for now, until Intel is done patching the kernel to sweep the smoking gun under the rug, leaving users even more perplexed, and potentially blaming the kernel itself." [22:08] DaemonFC schestowitz, MinceR Edited to add. [22:08] DaemonFC "I suppose that changing the firmware to stop sending garbage that confuses the driver in the first place and causes the kernel to respawn iwlwifi is too much to ask these IDIOTS for." [22:09] DaemonFC schestowitz, What Intel does is not actually open source. [22:09] DaemonFC The driver is more like Nvidia's glue layer to the kernel. [22:15] DaemonFC I had some of the early cards where you could use either driver, but once RadeonHD was abandoned, I had to switch them over to Radeon, which meant using the AtomBIOS. [22:15] DaemonFC I had been building RadeonHD and forcing Ubuntu to load it. [22:16] DaemonFC Then it slowed, and stalled, and Novell did the layoffs. [22:16] DaemonFC Finally, I had to chuck it because it was too old to even work properly with the newer kernels.
