[00:26] DaemonFC The industry didn't "win" anything. [00:27] MinceR they haven't stopped fighting [00:27] DaemonFC The government has extended copyright laws and made court rulings, and now after more than 20 years of inefficacious and incompetent government action, they have Google to do their dirty work for them. [00:28] MinceR uefi, pluton and wei are proof of that [00:28] MinceR they're trying to take general purpose computers away from us in the hope of making their bullshit business model work [00:28] DaemonFC Well, Google doesn't actually seem to control what you install in the Linux container. [00:29] DaemonFC And if it's a bittorrent client, it seems that using the Android version of the VPN software on a Chromebook is enough to route it through that. [00:30] DaemonFC I don't think they really care what you grab. It's the law firms monitoring the swarms that do that. Google just doesn't fight them when they come asking for things from the search index to be removed. [20:03] DaemonFC What's this package called? [20:03] DaemonFC Things like that. [20:04] DaemonFC Most of my SPACE HOG files go on the back up drive anyway because you can't have 200 GB of files for one thing on an SSD anyway. [20:04] MinceR PIGS IN SPACE [20:04] DaemonFC Yep [20:04] DaemonFC I was thinking about that when I was making coffee a minute ago. [20:04] DaemonFC It sounds like openSUSE people aren't confident in this ALP thing. [20:04] DaemonFC They've already announced another unplanned LEAP as a possibility. [20:05] DaemonFC And very little Wiki activity about ALP. [20:05] DaemonFC And the more I read about ALP, the more unsure I am about SUSE. [20:05] DaemonFC They talk of containers and immutable file systems. [20:05] DaemonFC Which is not my use case. [20:06] DaemonFC Debian and Arch seem totally committed to their native package format. [20:06] DaemonFC One thing that makes me go hmm about Debian KDE is it uses Wayland by default, although for some reason it seems maybe to work a bit better than on Leap. [20:07] MinceR wasn't that Access Linux Platform? [20:07] DaemonFC Possibly just newer builds or something. [20:07] MinceR from another MICROS~1 ally? [20:07] DaemonFC Advanced Linux Platform or something. [20:07] DaemonFC No, SUSE is doing ALP and it's rubbing me the wrong way now that I read about it. It sounds like Fedora Silverblue. [20:07] MinceR well, it's suse [20:08] MinceR of course it's both crap and evil [20:12] DaemonFC I'm strongly debating just moving to Debian. Maybe I should have to begin with. I checked it out on my other laptop this morning and it even has actual media codecs now! [20:12] MinceR not a significant difference [20:12] DaemonFC Like, I double clicked on some h265 files and they played! [20:12] MinceR it's still cancerd [20:12] DaemonFC Yeah, I'm also wondering about going back to Ext4. [20:12] DaemonFC I used to just set everything up under / and that worked out fine. [20:13] DaemonFC I could still use zram with zstd. I looked into that on the other laptop. Different process to set up. [20:13] DaemonFC They have some systemd thing managing it, of course. [20:13] DaemonFC Debian changed their Wiki on BtrFS. [20:14] DaemonFC Last I looked it said "BtrFS Compress has another major data loss bug every year." [20:15] DaemonFC Ext4 is a 64-bit file system when created with modern systems. [20:15] DaemonFC So you won't run into weird problems like you do on Reiser or something. [20:15] DaemonFC The closer we get to 2038, the more the problems with Reiser are manifesting themselves. [20:15] DaemonFC SUSE went with ReiserFS back in the day too. [20:17] DaemonFC Distributions that won't commit to their native package format are just not terribly helpful. [20:17] DaemonFC Fedora did BtrFS compress so people with laptops wouldn't scream about Flatpaks everywhere later. [20:20] DaemonFC No problem on an 8 TB hard disk. Problem on a 512 GB SSD. [20:21] DaemonFC Since Debian's installer makes there be no easy way to set up subvolumes at install time, laptop users may want to just skip this anyway. [20:21] *MinceR gives voice to jacobk [20:21] DaemonFC Everything is a trade-off though. BtrFS raw file system performance is much worse than Ext4. [20:22] DaemonFC If you use compression this might be better because the system has less data to read off the storage and write to it. [20:22] DaemonFC The compression before it hits the disk is handled by the kernel. [20:23] DaemonFC So if you're a laptop user with an SSD, Debian's installer is a WTF with BtrFS in that it won't make everything a nice neat subvolume for you. But do you really need those? [20:23] MinceR do you really need deadian? [20:23] MinceR do you really need cancerd? [20:23] DaemonFC You can certainly hack away in a console and make them and trick the setup program into using them, if you do it in the right order. [20:24] DaemonFC But Debian moves slowly and makes conservative choices and tests their upgrade process. [20:24] DaemonFC So the odds of NEEDING a snapshot to roll back to are small. [20:24] DaemonFC MinceR: Most BtrFS features don't and shouldn't interest a laptop user. [20:24] DaemonFC The one feature that might, in my opinion, is built-in compression. [21:01] DaemonFC If you've been using Ext4 or something, you're probably not doing that anyway. [21:06] DaemonFC I've always just used compress=zstd:1 and then gone back and done a defrag with -r -czstd [21:07] DaemonFC I actually looked into this issue and found that the additional compression ratios don't actually compress things that much further even though it goes out to like 15 or something, but what they will do is severely penalize your file system performance. And don't use force compress. Let the driver figure out if a file should just go into the disk compressed or not. [21:07] DaemonFC It takes forever to compress a "pak" file or something for a game, but you won't actually see any savings because they'd used DEFLATE or LZ4 or something in the file anyway. [21:08] DaemonFC I tried this out on Windows too. NTFS file compression is primitive and inefficient. [21:08] DaemonFC It makes no attempt to figure out if something actually compresses so you wait forever and maybe some game binaries deflate a bit, but the rest doesn't. [21:09] DaemonFC MinceR: "is not in the sudoers file. This incident has been reported to the adminstrator." [21:09] DaemonFC Nothing like having to become root to adduser to sudo.
