Another Casualty of the 'GAI' Ponzi Scheme: Most of the News Cycle and News Sites
Aside from the disinformation (marketing and market rigging), irresponsible misinformation and outright webspam (or LLM spew/slop), the "advanced hey hi" or the "generative hey hi" (AI) / GAI bubble yielded demand for what's killing ZDNet or its "Linux" section. Once gone, they will never come back. The "ruling class", which likely favours an ignorant population, doesn't seem to mind. Any factual accusation is nowadays at risk of being framed as "conspiracy theory", "Russian bot farm", or "hey hi arms race".
THERE are many ways in which the GAI bubble hurts society and destroys the planet (not just related to emissions and exhaustion of already-scarce water). This GAI bubble is obliterating human knowledge or the integrity of bodies of facts/texts, which took centuries if not millennia to amass, curate, and organise. Some reckless people opportunisticly throw brute force at thousands of years of human labour, falsely promising some "magic dust" while companies like NVIDIA sell "shovels" for gold on a hill (that has none).
Another unexplored side effect if not deliberate effect is accelerated death of journalism. But not for the reasons named above.
"This is one reason for the news shortage," an associate asserts, pointing to today's mainstream press, "AI swings between market euphoria and the specter of a bubble":
"The 'quota' for IT news is burned by marketeering and financial speculation articles masquerading as AI," the associate explains. And it goes further. Then he explains that tech news has dried up almost completely. "There is a lot happening but no coverage. I don't expect it to bounce back after the summer, just decline further."
Whatever is left after this bubble implodes (completely) is a sordid mess and a Web full of fake articles, even some books that are just low-grade plagiarism of many others. █
