  • A gaijin once again, jetlagged

    Well, I accidentally over-wrote the previous entry I made while in the U.S.

    Back in Japan we are again, my SO and myself, and quite jetlagged. Actually my SO is able to sleep, while I find myself up at 03:24 in the morning. I can hear it raining outside, and it reminds me that Typhoon 10 is on its way here.

    Our road trip was wonderful; we went somewhere that I hadn't been to in 30 years. The saying goes "You can't go home again" but it felt close to it on this trip. I say that because the U.S. now is not the same U.S. that I know from my childhood. A lot of changes have been really disorientating, and seeing things almost exactly as they were in the 1990s, and experiencing familiar sights and sounds and scents, was a great comfort.

    After the delivery and the chaos that ensued[1], we were moved to a postpartum room. I forgot its actual name, it was something less medical, like "mother and baby care". The room was much smaller, probably because they didn't expect to have as many people in the room at the same time.

    I have been asked that question a couple of times by Americans since June when Macron decided to dissolve the Assemblée Nationale. I usually try to give some facts, but it's difficult to understand without explaining how the French political system works. So let's do that, shall we. And then I can explain a little more how messy the current situation is.

    A precondition of intellectual progress is that each generation can build on the foundation laid down by its predecessors, and thereby reach new heights. Without a durable record of knowledge, we would be stuck re-inventing the rudiments over and over, doomed to never reach any degree of sophistication exceeding that which can be developed by a single human mind over the course of a single lifetime.

    I've mentioned recently that I'm feeling calmer and more brain-healthy recently than I have for a few months. Someone at work today even mentioned matter-of-fact that I was quite stressed a month ago. This improvement is ...pleasing. A funny result of this is that I'm absolutely back on my bullshit with amateur computer programming.

    I have ridiculous gemtext-related project in mind, which I won't write more about until/unless I pull it off. I've gotten back into contributing a few things to th e BookWyrm project. And thanks to some stuff I subscribe to, today I encountered a few interesting projects, and added another one of my own

  • Additional install by pipx

    I wanted to test Qtile on my PinePhone. I have installed PostmarketOS, so the only way was to `pipx install qtile`. It went smoof but I wanted to use stuff from qtile-extras. That lib was not in PostmarketOS repositories, too. The only way was throug `pip`. But I need to have it in Qtile installation. That's why I learned new command: `pipx inject qtile qtile-extras`. Awesome :)

    Some weeks ago I bought Pinephone to test how much Linux is ready for the mobile phone. I was ready to switch if basic parts will work :) Sadly one of the main features still not works: mobile identification (signature). All my bank accounts or other government logins are based on that. So, I had to put Pinephone away as my main device

    a few weeks ago I created a YouTube account for the purpose of uploading videos I take while riding my bicycle. I don't have a camera yet and I haven't been anywhere since I'm still recovering from the heath stroke I had in July, but the account is there so I started commenting in videos I watched.

    After posting a comment on a video of a user I watch often I realized my tone was a bit rude. I thought I was being witty but it read a little mean. It was not my intention, but I read other comments I wrote and I felt a similar 'vibe'.

    • Return to Form?

      A mug of tea and a Digestive biscuit in hand, I sit to jot down some notes about what I've been doing and thinking about recently.

      First off, Lagrange v1.18 has been in the cooker for a few months, slowly but surely getting new improvements. For now I'm focusing on the desktop release, with the headlining features — so far, at least — being the official TUI variant and support for sending Misfin messages.

      When it comes to the former, TUI has been something I've wanted to do properly for a long time, afforded by the use of my custom GUI toolkit: the same code can run virtually unmodified on a text-based canvas instead of a graphical one — a feat that few applications can boast about. The huge benefit is obviously that with the TUI you can run Lagrange in a terminal, even remotely over SSH. It's a significant expansion of the environments where the app can run. In fact, it's hard to come up with additional platforms that would make sense, now.
