GO Media ☛ A Scrapped Overwatch Netflix Show, A Proposed Call Of Duty RTS, And Four More Details From An Upcoming Book On Blizzard
Activision Blizzard has been the subject of immense attention and scrutiny over the past three years, ever since the company was sued over an alleged culture of workplace harassment in 2021. This was followed by a $69 billion acquisition by Microsoft and over 2000 layoffs at the company. With all these big, far-reaching changes making headlines, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of all the other happenings within the company and its many individual teams. Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment is an upcoming book from Bloomberg (and ex-Kotaku) reporter Jason Schreier, and it’s going to blow the lid off several untold stories from the Warcraft and Overwatch developer. But we already know some of what’s in store, because in the lead-up to the book’s October 8 release, Schreier held a Reddit AMA in which he answered some big and small questions about the state of Blizzard.

Sky News ☛ New Post Office scandal report sparks call for 'fast action' as software is compared to Horizon
Capture was introduced to branches before Horizon in the 1990s and has today been described as "a flawed system which was destroying lives whilst officials repeatedly ignored the evidence playing out in front of their eyes".
[...]
Steve Marston, 68, says he was wrongly convicted of theft and false accounting after errors caused by Capture accounting software.
Auditors found shortfalls of £79,000 at his branch in Greater Manchester in 1998 - he subsequently pleaded guilty to theft and false accounting.
He said Capture "was totally unfit for use and should never have been released".
[...]
Mr Lewis claims he was warned "not to be a troublemaker" and told the issues were only happening to him.
It wasn't until he watched the TV drama, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, that he "realised" similarities between Horizon victims and himself such as "unexplained losses".
Documents seen by Sky News also show the Post Office knew Capture was prone to glitches which could cause accounting issues.

New SkillBridge Requirements and OPM Extends Direct Hiring Authority for STEM Jobs
IBM initiates another round of layoffs as part of its ongoing “workforce rebalancing” strategy, primarily affecting senior-level programmers, sales, and support staff, according to The Register. IBM confirmed the cuts to CRN, stating that they reflect a “very low single-digit percentage” of its global workforce, with the expectation that overall headcount will remain stable by year’s end. Public notices filed via WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) letters show that in California alone, IBM laid off 54 employees in Santa Clara County and 57 in San Francisco County, while in Washington state, 63 workers were let go. Notably, some of the affected positions include AI engineers and data scientists.

About PACE: "We Don't Play to Their Tune." "Relations Will Become Tense"
The session's agenda includes the detention and trial of Julian Assange and its impact on human rights, as well as discussions on propaganda and freedom of information in Europe. In June of this year, the case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was dismissed, and the U.S. authorities withdrew the extradition request. Assange was accused of espionage in the U.S. In 2019, British police detained him, and Assange admitted in a U.S. court that he had unlawfully obtained and disseminated classified information related to national security.

Verizon service down, users report phones are in ‘SOS’ mode
Verizon users are reporting issues with their mobile phones, citing problems such as “no signal” (SOS mode) and “complete blackout.” Additionally, Verizon internet customers have experienced slower-than-usual speeds.
A nationwide telecommunication outage on Monday morning affected tens of thousands of cellphone users.
Verizon customers were hit the hardest, followed by those with AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks real-time outages.
“We are not experiencing a nationwide outage. Our national network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers are having attempting to connect to users on another network,” AT&T said in a post on X, previously known as Twitter.
