an Eve at The Midnight
a slow sip of the tip of the tobacco pipe, a gentle drag from a shallow whiskey glass - he sits back, exhaling calm and contemplation into a cloud to slither and dance amongst the bottles behind the bar
a distant stare - Smudge seemingly moving his tail and inspecting a coaster within this moment. As though he had his errands to run, while my easy onset of buzz and chill hung with the sun rays gleeming from my left

Carthaginian Elephants
I had always assumed that Carthaginian elephants were African elephants that had been brought up from the interior but they might have been a unique North African sub-species that became extinct during the ancient period.

Does it make sense to write to politicians?
In the past few months I've taken to writing more to my member of parliament and member of the assemblée nationale to ask that they take certain positions and express my opinion on certain issues. I'm torn on if this is something worth doing.

Thatâs fun for my copy, but how about me?
Some science fiction ideas are based on making a copy of a person, like âuploadingâ them into cyber heaven or teleporting them by breaking them down into molecules and reconstructing a copy.
If you subject yourself to one of these machines, you will end. Your subjective timeline will end. Itâs death, basically.
There might be one or more copies of you but it wonât be you waking up inside that copy. That copy believes itâs you. That copy wakes up and is like âOh, awesome, this liâl teleport went nicelyâ. Remembers that time in second grade when you had a nosebleed and were allowed to leave class early or whatever. Good for it. But youâll be gone.

Sending sms from command line on pinephone postmarketos
I want to send sms from command line with my pinephone because my previous solution will stop working soon. In my previous solution, a 2G/3G phone was connected to a computer with a USB cable and I was using `gammu` to send the sms. This will stop working since the 2G and 3G networks will be shutdown to free bandwidth for 5G.

RetroChallenge 2024 entry: Day I and ][
ecliptik [1] had phlogged about the RetroChallenge 2024 (RC2024) [2] last month and it sounded similar to the Old Computer Challenge (OCC) [3] in gopherspace, so I decided to give it a go. It looks like RetroChallenge primarily existed on the surface web [4], but it looks like they have also created a gopherhole at SDF. Welcome to the Internet Gopher Club Underground Syndicate, retrochallenge!

I'll Join His Wraith
The ancient tapestry (I laughingly call it a tapestry) that habitually covers the Raspberry Pi with attached mini-screen whose name is *Yak* and to whom I am connected now writing this was on the floor at the base of the monitor stand earlier. Yak sits on top of the monitor. Possibly it's not the best position for him / her / it / zubby, but I chose it for its proximity to the 12TB hard drive that is filled with backups from various parts of other machines round the household. Oouh, baby. Now what was the purpose of this opening salvo? Ah - yes. It was the cat. It had to be the cat. It's always the cat. The *cat* is to blame.
Bender-boy is in Japan at the moment. He's sent me various photos and brief commentaries. I said that I should join him. This is *truth*. I *should*. And I will. Or, rather, I'll join his wraith because his corporeal being will be long gone before I show my presence there. Yes. I shall head west. *Go west, my son* and all that rot.

Another One Bites the Dust
I've had to turn off two accounts at work today. Things aren't looking good with our small company. I really need to buckle down and set up a couple of types of resumes to figure out what I need to do next. I'm tired of the current industry that I'm in and 7 years has been way too much time to stick around.

circumlunar updates
I fixed solderpunk's circumlunar address a little while back because I noticed the top level domain info wasn't updating anymore, but the zaibatsu side was. Today dokuja pointed out the same thing was happening to him. So I just went through and updated all the phlogs that were at circumlunar.space to now be at zaibatsu.circumlunar.space, and lo! so many updates. Enjoy!

Misfin-Server v0.5.7c Update
I have updated my misfin-server software to v0.5.7c to add the following features:
* Threads - the interface will now show threads based on gemmail subjects, and ordered by last updated time of the thread. This will be tweaked further in the future.
* Mailinglist archives are also ordered by threads.

less passive, more active
trying another attempt at getting myself off the internet! i'm trying to curb my "passive" online time. getting stuck in consuming and looking for things to consume and not finding anything satisfying - it's draining and such a mood sink. and such a trap, so difficult to tear away from to try to do Anything even if i have that impulse. right now i'm trying to achieve that through time tracking. there are things i need the internet for that are exempt from the tracker, because i'm Doing Things - socializing, including watching movies and shows with people, gaming with people, banking stuff etc. even parts of social media count as proper Doing - when i'm replying, having conversations etc. But just scrolling out of boredom is on the timer.
today my morning glance through mastodon and tumblr, plus one youtube video added up to just over 1h. it's only 1pm and i do most of my passive stuff in the evenings so we'll see how it goes. i don't know what number i want to achieve, for now i'm getting a gauge on what it is. (
