Under the Baobab Tree (A tribute to Clarkson, Hammond, and May)
Outstretched along the wire-thin horizon,
where the dead lay in shallow graves.
Three animals set forth on a great migration,
To cross a lifeless salted sea.
A buzzard flew in from the burkea tops,
followed by his loyal pack of wild dogs.
And told them of the perils that lay ahead;
fresh meat for scavengers should they perish.

ICON 49 Retrospective
My “home” convention is [[ICON]], which is celebrating its 49th year. Interestingly, I was born the same year it started so it has been one of those things that has been lock-step in my life since I first went to it in 1995.

What's happening?
One day there's a flickering 40-watt bulb barely illuminating losing lottery ticket floor litter, whose half unraveled cloth cord insulation is poised to burn the place down.
Next thing I know, newcomers are kayaking a martini river, free popcorn, and - most importantly - detritus stuffing dollar bills in his garter atop the bar... i.e. POSTING!

Miguel
This one is another post from my memories of elementary school. I don’t have that many because it was difficult for me and not thinking about it was my favorite thing growing up.
I’m not talking about the academic situation, but the social part of it. As an adult I know it is a crucial part of becoming a well adjusted person, but oh boy did nobody ever care about those poor kids in Mexico’s public schools (mine was even one of the better ones).
Miguel transferred from another school in fourth grade. I was used to playing the role of the smart kid since always, because all the other kids were so behind (most of my generation raised by tv) but when he came around there was finally another kid actually learning something in school and most likely at home or somewhere else (then there’s Ulises, but he was, uh, street smart).

Recovering SeaweedFS
Lately, I've been quite fond of [[SeaweedFS]]. It isn't as powerful as [[Ceph]] but it considerably easier to maintain and manage. There are some tradeoffs, such as finding bit rotting (when the disks start to fail), but I find it not quite as “fragile” when it comes to using a random collection of Linux machines.
One of the features I want to play with SeaweedFS is the ability to upload a directory transparently to a S3 bucket (not AWS though, they are too big). I'm thinking about that for later, when I want to make an extra, off-site back up critical files including Partner's photo shoots.
