Why Technical Sites Need Not Make Political Recommendations or Endorsements
Except perhaps when it's for some purely technical role, e.g. FCC chief
To start this with the gist (or "nutshell"), tech sites are not likely to actually influence how their readers vote in presidential elections. People form their political views based on mostly political sites.
OK, with that disclaimer out of the way (at the top), misunderstandings are less likely to happen.
Alright, so it's Monday and everyone in the US is trying to convince everybody else to vote the same way as oneself. Watchtroll the patent extremist tacitly says vote for the fascists who elevate Andrei Iancu, who is attracting patent trolls as clients, to the top of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Way to divide and alienate people who come to your site to read about patents, copyrights etc...
For the record, Biden elevated a Microsofter to the top of the USPTO, so there's nothing brilliant about it either.
Generally speaking, based on our experience (2008 election), commenting on the candidates around election day is only likely to alienate some people while convincing or swaying nobody. We'll focus on the tech policy, thank you very much... █
