IN most countries, the dominant platform is Android, which contains Linux. Many people use so-called 'smartphones' and none can run Windows. So Microsoft is in a tough place, with Windows at 11% in India (world's largest population) based on Web usage.
What about the allegedly (by its own metrics) largest economy? Well, the statCounter numbers show a large dip for Windows and all-time high for GNU/Linux, not even counting ChromeOS. This is what it looks like in the country where GNU/Linux started in the 1980s by Richard Stallman:
Just to be very clear, both UNIX and GNU/Linux started in the US. The Finnish person who wrote a kernel, moved to the US and was later naturalised as American only wrote a kernel. The kernel is important, but the development of the entire operating system started almost a decade earlier. █
