GNU/Linux Climbs to Record Levels in Switzerland. Can the EU, Norway, the UK, and Switzerland Divorce GAFAM?
Data from statCounter about Switzerland looks like this:
Including Android, Windows has fallen to all-time lows:
Earlier this year the statCounter data showed Windows having problems in Switzerland and this month it looks like GNU/Linux has a milestone, albeit limited to this one survey.
Germany openly speaks about becoming independent from the US. How about Switzerland? Will it invest in GNU/Linux and Free software? This new article speaks of "Delivering whats needed to make Europe sovereign" and to quote:
The EU is paying a fortune for broken commercial [sic] software, criticizes Michiel Leenaars of the Dutch NLnet Foundation in an interview with netzpolitik.org. Together with his team, he supports open-source, free solutions — funded by the EU. But that could soon come to an end.In the 1980s, a group of internet enthusiasts in the Netherlands founded the NLnet Foundation. Their mission: to improve the internet.
To achieve this, the nonprofit organization supports open-source projects. Its long list of hundreds of funded initiatives includes the protocol that underlies the Fediverse, Mastodon which is seen by many as a Twitter alternative, and the YouTube alternative PeerTube.
One key source of funding for the foundation is the EU. But now, there’s a risk that this funding could be cut off. What happens then? We discuss this with the foundation’s Director of Strategy, Michiel Leenaars. Naturally, we used an open-source video conferencing tool for the conversation: Jitsi.
Jitsi is good, or used to be good (I used its predecessor about 15 years ago). It got messed about with amid a takeover (like Skype), but BBB and Mumble work too. There's also GNU Jami. Leave vendor lock-in behind. Will Europe stop paying GAFAM for mere "licences"? █
