    What a ride it's been lately. I've attended big and cool events. I went on a week-long trip abroad with a new friend of mine. I've had my usual music lessons, and I've watched a lot of things unfold in the last few weeks. And when all that was dealt with, I caught influenza, which kept me down low for a while.

    The combined effect of all this is that all the big events I've been excited for came one after another, and then I was ill at home a while. A fog descended over me. All the things I had waited for had happened. Now what? Long days of socialising and activities turned into boring days of headache and no activities. The contrast was stark. I felt a bit hollow. Glad to have seen and done all I had, and sad that it was over. I felt empty, now that all the big things I had waited months for had come.

    I got some good feedback on my last entry, so I figured I would keep it going until the feedback runs out. 😂

  • [Old] Plan Files?

    A long time ago you would use finger to see if other users were logged into a system. They could share .plan or .project files that were accessible via finger. One way I could imagine using this service is to publish short messages about what i'm up to, at my computer, since that's really the most convenient way to post? I started converting the smolpub.sh script into a small rust program. I'll finsih that soon.

    Today I'm releasing my super simple #FreeBSD #Sandbox script. This script creates a sandbox per directory, allowing you to run untrusted code while preventing access to your home directory. No setup or configuration needed, just cd into a directory and run "sandbox.sh". Also perfect for creating dev environments, simply add a "packages.pkg" file with the packages you need for your project, run "sandbox.sh" and voila! A sandbox with the packages you want installed, just inside your sandbox (doesn't pollute your host OS). #freebsd #sandbox #chroot

    First: my apologies if I spammed the feed unnecessarily. I did not realize archived posts would show up all at once like that.

    Instead of hogging the feed, I've decided to leave those posts where I wrote them, at //drmollytov.flounder.online. Instead, I'll start from here starting today.

    I'm hoping eventually to pull all my little Internet musings into this one blog - though we'll see how well that goes. Links to the stuff I have elsewhere are all on the home page.

  • can we please stop pretending generative AI has a future

    The school district in which I work released its official policy on the use of generative AI today.

    I haven't read the policy yet - I was busy picking up a book order - but based on the email that presented it to the staff, I expect to have Strong Opinions about it.

    Said email, from the assistant superintendent, is unabashedly pro-gen AI. It breathlessly cites statistics about "gen AI startups" (approximately 5,000 in the US, per said email) and "investments" ($94 billion-ish). It announces excitedly that gen AI is most definitely the wave of the future and that, as educators, it would be irresponsible for us not to incorporate this technology into our work!

    ...Click one tab over in my beleaguered work browser, and there's a long email thread from the AASL listserv on whether we should even allow the use of generative AI in our classrooms, let alone promote it.
