Phasing Out Vista 10 in Nations Where ~90% of Windows Users Still Rely on It
Recipe for another Microsoft disaster
WE recently wrote about Microsoft's perils in Madagascar and in Ethiopia, where GNU/Linux grew a lot [1, 2, 3]. It's fertile for GNU/Linux adoption for economic reasons, not just principles. Many "old" PCs cannot and will not run Vista 11. They cannot run macOS either, so the natural choice then is GNU/Linux or any of the BSDs. Shown above are the latest statCounter numbers from Eritrea, Ethiopia's neighbour to the north. They show very poor adoption of Vista 11, i.e. same or worse than in Ethiopia. If Vista 10 reaches "end of life" (for real) this coming autumn, we can expect many people to dabble in and install GNU/Linux.
Eritrea is known for conflicts and refugees (I know some in person), but it's actually an important exporter, a nation a bit larger than the nation of Portugal (coloniser in Africa and south America).
Eritreans have very good reasons (more so after January 20) to avoid American software. With cuts to USAID we can expect AIDS and conflicts to intensify further (it's already a dangerous country). Eritreans can make their own distros; from what we can gather, none exists at the moment. █
