Pushing Microsoft's Proprietary Trash/Trap as "Open" and "Linux" (Windows is 'Linux' Now?)
Brands getting hijacked and distorted. This is mindless openwashing of Windows. Also see: Proprietary Windows Versus "Linux" News (Trying to Keep People on Windows, Never Exploring GNU/Linux)
Many articles this week - especially in the past 24 hours - are published about "end of 10" in relation to "KDE for Windows 10 Exiles" (8 examples of articles so far collected in the sister site). We even stumbled upon some LLM slop; of course, in today's filthy Web, it is also starting to creep in, sooner or late:
It's a fake 'article'. As mentioned just moments ago in Slopwatch.
There are also about a dozen articles about Steam Survey in relation to GNU/Linux and some which speak of statCounter, e.g. this and that ("Windows 11 market share stalls ahead of Windows 10 cutoff"). Quoting the latter:
After an impressive start to 2025, the last few months have not seen the market share of Windows 11 expand, according to Statcounter. After cresting the 40 percent mark by March, figures released at the start of June put the operating system's slice of the pie at 43.22 percent. The previous month, it was 43.72 percent.
In comparison, Windows 10's market share currently stands at 53.19 percent, slightly up on the previous month's 52.94 percent.
So Windows has very serious issues; "killing" Vista 10 isn't helping Microsoft, it is helping GNU/Linux.
So other than sabotaging GNU/Linux, owing to the man we sued last summer [1, 2], what can Microsoft do?
Well, now it's telling people not to move to Linux because Windows is already "Linux". Yes, that's right! Hijack the brands again! Confuse people! This new article tells people that "Windows Subsystem for Linux is now Open Source". (No, it is not.)
But they repeat the lie right from the very beginning: "Yes, WSL is now open source."
Nope, false.
One reader wrote to complain about this other article about WSL, which is actually a misnomer. "The author of this article mentioned in your Links page says he is a "Linux" user," we got told. "In fact his focus of interest is in the command line interface, which makes him a GNU user."
"There is passing mention of limitations caused by the absence of the Linux kernel. (There is a typo in the sentence.)"
"Yes," I told him, as the original WSL (or "WSL1") "had no Linux kernel. WSL2 has it, but it's Windows all the way."
So they try to steer people towards Windows under the guise of 'leaving' Windows.
An associate has just caught this new article: "WSL and Cygwin — which?" (don't click)
So this wordpress.com blog, DSPACE, gives us a false dichotomy.
So you want Linux? So you have two options: Windows or Windows.
To make matters worse, they false portray this as "open source".
Grotesque openwashing is fast becoming somewhat of a norm.
Hours ago we saw a "Non-FOSS Warning!" in a site called "It's FOSS", promoting the anti-FOSS options! So it's once again the site called xyz promoting the exact opposite of xyz.
What is happening to these people?
They also have lots and lots of VS Code (proprietary Microsoft spyware) promotions! They keep trying to promote this in a site called "It's FOSS":
Please note that most of these were published in the past month or so. Maybe it's time to just stop saying "FOSS". The people who use that term are promoting Microsoft. █
