Destination Geminispace (in the Age of LLM Slop and Slop Images That Infest the Web and Social Control Media)
Published June 29th, 2025:
The sister site abandoned Drupal nearly 3 years ago, only a few months before I quit my job and started spending more time writing online - something that I always wanted to do instead of writing to customers at work. I had already quit all social control media earlier in that same year.
In 2022 a lot happened. Many of us were still wearing masks (I still do by the way!), we exposed a number of big Microsoft scandals (the serial strangler from Microsoft is still furious about this), and then MElon bought Twitter, which he later rebranded and turned to dust (X.com is still broken by the way; many posts are gone for good, I've checked again this morning!).
Today in IRC we discussed what's happening to the Web and how a lot of new pages (not just old ones) are reducible to spam, ads disguised as 'articles', LLM slop, and even worse things, such as hate sites or troll farms.
What can salvage the Web? 2 days ago DistroTube (DT) published his latest video, which is entitled "Hey, DT! Will A.I. Kill Human Content Creation?" (he meant slop, not "hey hi")
The Internet is drowning in spam/chaff. The Web receives a greater proportion of it. Maybe that's because the Web is still so widely used, hence targeted a lot, unlike Geminispace.
Geminispace isn't vast, but at least it is - on average - a lot "cleaner". It's not composed by people who try to sell you something. It's operated by people like you and me, not the MElons and the Magats. █
