PCLinuxOS Recovering From Fire
We recently wrote about what happened to "PCLinuxOS Sites" (at least 3 of them) [1, 2].
"Catastrophic event caused the sites to go offline with a lot of data destroyed," I said the other night. PCLinuxOS spoke of a fire in its official site, as in... the physical hosting site. It looks like a nightmare scenario, where even backups onsite get destroyed.
"It's been a difficult time," an insider then told me. "Hopefully, we'll get everything back up & running soon."
I explained that pulling old blog posts from PCLinuxOS or pulling PCLinuxOS Magazine pages from our archives was doable. It was something which we have... as a bot downloads every page we link to in IRC.
Some time passed and progress was made. "Nice!" he said. "We were lucky! Our server guy had made a backup and he’s working with that now. Hopefully we’ll be going soon. I have a copy of every pdf as well."
"Thanks so much for the offer, though… I’ll share that information with the magazine editor."
This means it should be doable to get almost everything restored. "Always good to have backups," I said, and "the more, the merrier. 2 hours ago I bought a new 8TB drive."
"Sounds like it will hold a bit…. 😁" he replied.
Never underestimate the value of backups. Even if they are rarely used, when you finally need them... they are invaluable. █
