It's Time to Dump SharePoint and Here's What to Use Instead
Many workplaces, including the EPO (even the union!), wrongly adopted Microsoft SharePoint and rely on a monster with poor uptime, lots of avoidable maintenance overhead, and even security blunders ("How Not to Report News About Microsoft").
Here and in the sister site we've already accumulated and shared over a dozen press reports on reasons to dump Microsoft SharePoint ASAP. It's not possible to fix Microsoft SharePoint. In this case, even applying a patch won't be enough. The only viable, long-term solution is to remove Microsoft SharePoint.
"Microsoft SharePoint is in the news still," an associate explains, and "whenever it gets mentioned [anywhere] please [all us us ought to] remember to provide hyperlinks to" what it's to be replaced with, not how to 'fix' it.
Microsoft SharePoint can and should be replaced by some or at least one of the following:
They are what Microsoft Sharepoint is trying to imitate. "Those are what Microsoft does not want" anybody to mention, "in this context."
So says the associate. If you hear some colleague talking about Microsoft SharePoint, then bring up the alternatives to it. They won't only save money; they will improve many other things, various key aspects.
Does a colleague circulate an E-mail regarding Microsoft SharePoint this week?
"Then it might be best to start with the links to Nextcloud, ownCloud, Bookstack, MediaWiki, and MediaGoblin."
Something like this:
Dear xyz,As you are aware, Microsoft SharePoint is putting our operations and critical data at risk. It's all over the news and there is no simple fix, certainly not a permanent fix.
Can we please consider replacing Microsoft SharePoint with:
https://nextcloud.com/
https://owncloud.com/
https://www.bookstackapp.com/
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki
https://mediagoblin.org/
"There might be a few other packages to mention in addition to the above," the associate remarks, "but I am not sure. I just know that even Microsofters admit that Microsoft SharePoint is not fit for purpose and a royal pain in the ass, with lost data and the works." █
