History Will Be Distorted, Sometimes Intentionally, Under the Guise of Intelligence (Manipulated/Curated Slop)
Here in the UK (based on press reports that we see this week, including yesterday, it's not global yet), Google is phasing in slop as "AI Mode" [1, 2] - and sure, it's a misnomer - where clickthrough to original sources is about 10%, based on a recent study/survey. Put another way, it has been found that only about 1 in 10 people would bother to back facts by going to actual sites rather than blindly relying on the slop. As for "search" (whatever "Mode" that is), due to "AI Overview" - yes, it's a misnomer also - news sites report a 50% drop in clickthroughs. That's disturbing as it lessens an already-low incentive to cover news, which means that in due course Google slop will ingest or rely upon other slop or outright nonsense like "tweets".
Google is attacking information, replacing it with low-grade "fast food". This is a disaster long in the making; all of GAFAM participate in it, including Apple. At least Apple admitted slop was unreliable and generally showed less enthusiasm for it. With financial difficulties, however, Apple needs vapourware for financial engineering.
We need to convince more people to dump GAFAM along with this "GAFAM agenda". Militarised misinformation or military-grade chaff is a national security threat, even domestically. █
