Most of Geminispace Can Probably Fit on a CD-ROM or a DVD (the Textual Part)
If one excludes very large capsules and ones that contain non-textual content
Earlier today we argued that "There Are Probably Over a Million Pages in Geminispace". Let's assume many are 2-4 kilobytes in size or an average of 6KB. A million pages of that size would fit on a CD-ROM.
Reality, however, is more complicated. There are binary downloads in some capsules, some capsules have many images (TAZ for instance), and there are some exceptionally long texts in some capsules. But if one sets aside those 'edge case', it's feasible to put 90% or more of all Gemini URLs on a CD, maybe a DVD.
"One point about the million pages in Gemini space," an associate notes this morning, is that those pages are information of one kind or another not filler. The pages themselves are more or less raw text, not a 2MB payload of graphics+javascripts+CSS+ads wrapped around 2kB of text."
There are also no ads or any slopfarms/spamfarms we're aware of. That filters out a lot of junk or pseudo-content. █
