Mass Layoffs in Starbucks... and Society Loses Nothing of Value
I make my own coffee at home. I drink a lot of it. I get good ingredients and decent blends for it. It helps keep me awake. It gives me something to sip while reading. If not for coffee, I'd drink more tea. They don't cost all that much, just manual labour.
But you see, all of us in IRC can agree that Starbucks (and others like it, Costa in the UK for example) don't really serve any purpose. For coffee and tea they charge about 10 times more than the cost of ingredients+preparation... and of washing the dishes (they charge more for sit-insiders; sometimes they don't even give any dishes anymore) and they pay their staff laughably lousy salaries. Where does all the money go? A vain executive who was put in charge by Bill Epsteingate Sr.? The shareholders in Wall Street?
No, thanks.
Society might even be better off if Starbucks shuts down entirely. Starbucks is a conglomerate, not an eatery. People will still be able to enjoy coffee and all those other hot brews, even the fake coffees. If Starbucks shuts down and people want to drink/eat out, the options will exist. Heck, they stand to gain from Starbucks' demise and they hire locally, pay taxes locally (not evading tax like Starbucks), have incentive to satisfy clients, improve service... █
