When the Slop Bubble Pops People Will Say Richard Stallman Was Right (Again)
With "cloud" (or when it comes to servers being spun as Clown Computing), Richard Stallman has long said it was a bubble based on groundless, mindless hype and dishonesty. They just rebranded everything as "cloud", then claimed victory*. Now the do the same with "AI".
What we have now is GAFAM plus IBM and Oracle faking something about "clown" (or "cloud") and "AI". Richard Stallman won't fall for it, as it's just the old ploy recycled, but even The Register MS now reports inconsistencies: "The fact that some of Oracle core customers don't yet have the money for all the spending against which it is borrowing huge sums has caught the eye of credit rating agency Moody's, which pointed out the significant "counterparty risk" in Oracle's projected growth – the possibility that another party fails to meet its obligations."
We wrote about this before. It's a circular financing pyramid scheme. It won't work. It's a kind of fraud.
In recent hours IBM was mocked for playing along with this hype-making, including "Quantum". To quote: "You show the world how you can multitask and talk about AI BS (oh, management is sooo gooooood). hire some consultants (McKinsey is the preference) and pay them a lot of money to figure out what to talk about next .. oh, the power of QUANTUM things...!!! [...] Cisco used to have that all-important lead position, but now they too are just another plumbing vendor. Whether it's routers, switches, voice-over-IP or whatever, customers can pick and choose from a variety of vendors at every price point. There's something for everyone. [...] AI? Doesn't matter. Quantum? If it ever comes to fruition, that won't matter either."
What was once known as Computer Science turned into "IT". Now it's just a circus of buzzwords and marketing people in suits. █
_______
* AWS, Oracle, Azure (Microsoft), and Google's clown engine all had many layoffs lately. There's nothing left to rebrand as "cloud".
