Jérôme Marin ☛ 5G’s unfulfilled promises
For consumers, the main issue with 5G lies in its value proposition. Operators centered their marketing strategy almost entirely on much faster connection speeds, but this improvement remains nearly imperceptible for the vast majority of everyday uses. There was thus no real breakthrough — unlike 3G, which ushered in mobile Internet browsing, or 4G, which democratized video consumption. As a result, the transition has been far slower, especially in Europe.
According to Arcep, the French telecom regulator, 28.4 million SIM cards were active on the 5G network before the summer. That’s ten million more than a year earlier, but still only one-third of the total users. Above all, the average price of mobile plans has not changed in five years. The transition is happening more quickly elsewhere in Europe, with 55% of subscriptions being 5G, according to network equipment supplier Ericsson. This figure even climbs to 85% in the United States, where major operators no longer offer 4G-only plans.

Digital Camera World ☛ The shocking reason why your phone photos could be history's biggest loss
All this got me thinking about how such images might be discovered – or not – in the future. More pictures are taken daily on smartphones than was ever the case with snapshot cameras, but these fleeting moments are fleeting in themselves – perhaps viewed once or twice, forgotten and then likely lost.
Photographers are – or should be – more careful about archiving their images from a smartphone, but a great many people simply move on from device to device, and so decades of social history are more or less disappearing into the ether.
