    Another way is to use a lexer on the string which in Perl (and elsewhere) often involves using regular expressions to match various bits of the input whilst looping carrying out actions in a little state machine until the input runs out, an error occurs, or an external event terminates the process because it has gone awry somehow, a common fate of buggy lexers, as much can go wrong here.
