The Garnet Star
Sadly, I have to report that I completely missed the lunar eclipse this morning (2026-03-03) despite optimum viewing conditions. I simply hadn't heard about it until I read about it later in the day. However, the eclipse took place around 2am AKST, and the night time temps right now are around -30 ℉, so it wouldn't have been an easy observation to pull off. I am interested to hear if Robert got up early for that one or not.

The Hunt
I was laid off from my job two weeks ago today. That doesn't sound like a lot of time--and in truth, it isn't--but this is the longest period I've been out of work since 2012. It still feels a bit surreal when I think about it.
In a way, I haven't really stopped working at all; I just perform different tasks. Now, instead of calling meetings, tweaking software builds and querying databases, I'm calling recruiters, tweaking my resume, and querying job listings. It all still adds up to nearly 8 hours of work a day. I still wake up at my usual hour and wrap up my day around the same time as before.

The continuing sage of the Brazilian SYN flood attack
The SYN attacks have not abated [1]. I thought they had—for the past 36 hours or so it was quiet but no, it picked back up again.
But in the mean time, I did find one person having the same issues about 18 months ago: “A SYN flood DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack up close and personal [2]” and “My DDoS attack: the rest of the story [3].” It's not anything I didn't already know.
