In the news: Digg’s open beta shuts down after just two months, blaming AI bot spam
It’s only been a year since Digg founder Kevin Rose, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, and a few others announced the link-sharing site would relaunch, promising a “social discovery built by communities, not by algorithms.” Now, two months after opening its Reddit-like platform to the public, Digg is announcing a “hard reset” that’s shutting down operations and will “significantly downsize the Digg team.”
20 years ago Digg.com was a hub for tech discussions, with the "Digg Effect" often eclipsing the "Slashdot Effect". At some point Digg.com was also a powerful hub for political news, e.g. ahead of the election of Obama.
But it's 2026 already; social control media is a bubble and it's attracting loads of spam, slop etc.
Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian can relaunch Digg.com, but we doubt it'll work "this time for real!"
This duo is nostalgic about their "glory days" (when people watched and listened to them because of Digg), but the brand "Digg" is rotten or rotting. █
