Harvard University ☛ When is it time to dissent?
“Both as lawyers and as persons of faith, not just blind followers, we will inevitably wrestle with questions of whether to disagree and how to do so productively,” said Basile, assistant professor at Boston College Law School, during a talk sponsored by the Catholic Law Students Association at Harvard Law School.
Dissent is inherent to our legal system, but also to faith, said Basile ’08, J.D. ’15, Ph.D. ’16. While law is about disputes and disagreements, faith becomes richer by probing and questioning rather than blindly accepting institutional precepts, he said.

Max Leibman ☛ For entertainment purposes only.
Microsoft Copilot has been in the news this week after the discovery that its terms and conditions include the phrase, “Copilot is for entertainment purposes only.” This has caused no small amount of mirth among commentators, who note that Microsoft has pushed Copilot as a productivity solution.
Microsoft has since said that this language dates to an earlier, more casual Bing-centric AI experience, and will be removed in a forthcoming update. But given this surprising disclosure, and the fact that Microsoft has integrated Copilot throughout its online services, operating systems, Office suite, and mobile software, I thought it would be useful to share the Microsoft Copilot Terms & Conditions in full, in case there are any other surprises lurking.

[Repeat] Tom's Hardware ☛ French government says it's ditching Windows for Linux — country accelerates plans to ditch US-based software in digital sovereignty push
France is accelerating its digital sovereignty plans. In an official press release this week, the country’s DINUM announced its “exit from Windows in favor of workstations running on the Linux operating system.” (machine translation).
The DINUM is an important section of the French state, headed by the Interministerial Directorate for Digital Affairs, so this will mark a key changeover in the machinations of government, eliminating U.S.-based commercial interests from workstation computers. We assume some French flavor of Linux will be adopted to satisfy the stated objective of migrating to sovereign solutions. Joining the DINUM in this mission for digital sovereignty are France’s Directorate General for Enterprises (DGE), the National Cybersecurity Agency of France (ANSSI), and the State Procurement Directorate (DAE).

France24 ☛ Cloud of uncertainty over US-Iran talks in Pakistan as sides trade accusations
A cloud of uncertainty hung Friday over the scheduled start of talks in Pakistan between the United States and Iran, with no announcement yet on the arrival of negotiators and both sides accusing the other of failing to properly implement a fragile ceasefire. US President The Insurrectionist has voiced displeasure at Iran's handling of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which was meant to be reopened under the deal, while Tehran has reacted angrily to Israeli attacks in Lebanon, insisting that it too falls under the agreement -- something Washington disputes. Islamabad was nonetheless pressing ahead with its preparations for the high-stakes talks.

Nadia Massih is pleased to welcome Dr. Randa Slim, Director of the Conflict Resolution and Track II Dialogues Program at the Middle East Institute and Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). France24 ☛ Hungary vote: Rising opposition threatens Orban’s grip on power
Sunday’s election in Hungary could have repercussions far beyond its borders. Since Prime Minister Viktor Orban came to power in 2010, his illiberal policies have made Hungary the only EU member state classified as “partly free” by Freedom House. His close ties to Vladimir Putin have also complicated Europe’s response to the war in Ukraine. Hungary has become something of a black sheep within the EU – but also a model for far-right movements elsewhere. The question now is whether that model is faltering. Opinion polls show a strong lead for the centre-right opposition Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, who defected from Orban’s party in 2024. Meanwhile, the government’s efforts to boost sluggish economic growth by attracting Chinese investment appear to have backfired. Our regional correspondent Gulliver Cragg reports.
