Keeping Server Costs Under Control in Age of Zombie-Majority Net
In recent days and especially this morning (or overnight) we've dealt with some abusive traffic that resulted in timeouts for many, even if not complete downtime. We've put in some effort and new measures are in place to tackle this issue. This coming weekend there will also be network maintenance, but downtime is very unlikely.
The Web has become such a sordid mess not just due to chatbots and LLM bots - a form of 'Web cancer' - which scrape sites carelessly, even recklessly (the latter sounds a lot more malignant). With growing crises and rising costs of energy (power is needed to run servers) that translates into higher bills for everybody - and yes, that includes hosting bills. The madness won't end but will abate somewhat once the bubble pops. That is beside concerns about hardware costs. █
