On Planning and the Great Outdoors
I am, and always have been, an avid hiker and lover of everything outdoors. It really doesn't matter what, exactly -- hiking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, gardening, etc. If it's outdoors, I love it. Something about being away from our built-up, human world has always scratched some sort of primordial itch deep within me. Somehow, being surrounded by the wilderness brings me a deep state of inner peace that I simply don't get in my day-to-day life.
And it's not like it's just being away from my responsibilities. I've experienced this going as far back as I can remember and nothing changes it. It just somehow feels right to be in "the wilderness". Especially if I'm just putting one foot in front of the other, but more on that later. It's not like I have a deep longing to be away from people: I'm introverted, but I'm not some sort of Edward Abbey type that can't stand people. Even being in more urban "wilderness" areas awash with hordes of other people still feels better than being in the built-up, human world.

i'm sure we can learn nothing from the fall of the roman empire
Losing repeatedly against the same opponent is surely a different thing. So is losing every war/police action/incursion/"operation" since 1945. I'm not a military strategist or a historian, so I can assert with complete professional confidence that these things surely have nothing in common.

Technology and Free Software
-
High technology is a social exercise
My favourite piece of wisdom from the permacomputing community is the honest admission that a mere mortal cannot build something on their own as complex as an operating system or browser engine. As such, no single person could ever fully understand them. In a civilizational collapse scenario, these technologies would probably be "lost," as we would collectively lack the capacity to reproduce them.

Big Camera
A couple weekends ago I was wandering around a festival when someone approached and asked if I was part of the events team.
No, why do you ask?
Because of the camera.
I was carrying a Canon R6. Almost everyone was taking photos all around, but almost everyone was using their phones. I didn’t see any other big cameras.
She asked if I would take a photo of her and her friend. Sure, why not?
They posed like it was a professional photoshoot. It seemed to be to them a great novelty.
