  • Signal to Noise

    I'm not sure what I'm writing in writing this, but I've wanted to write it for a while. My thoughts can be syllables and splashes i urge myself to guide into a mold of coherence, sharpened to a point.

    Sometimes I resent that mold, resent the not incorrect assumption that communication relies on a bartering of symbols and stories, truth in context between words. Words carry weight, slowed enough that we can model their migration. They bend, articulate, bounce off each other, but in the end all they can do is sit still and hope for coherence. But I don't know if I feel limited by coherence or scared of making my point.

      DMZ or "Demilitarized Zone" was borrowed from probably the recent Korean War, and may not be the best of terms as there is not really a war† on nor are people generally installing military equipment onto the network in question, or so one might hope. But we are stuck with the term, unless someone can invent a better one and convince enough other people to use it. DMZ itself has seen some evolution and slop in exactly what it means, perhaps becoming a more generic "special protected pocket" or a "DMZ host" on some home routers. Strictly speaking a DMZ would be a restricted area between two different networks, usually but not always between an internal network and the Internet, though a DMZ might also exist between a bank and a small internet bookseller where bank transactions are run through a DMZ. This would (hopefully) hinder access from the bank's systems to internal commerce hosts, and also isolate the bank connectivity nodes from the internal commerce hosts as well. In theory, attacks to any of the three areas would have difficulty moving to an adjacent area, usually on account of firewall rules that allow for the minimum amount of traffic necessary between the partitions.
