Several parts "ago" (earlier this month and last month after discussing Access to Justice) I wrote about Legal Aid, which we had been granted. It offered us access to a Director of a law firm here in Manchester and two media barristers (based in London), whose assessment we appreciate and value.

In the last part we spoke of how a law firm snowed us under literally ~100 kilograms of legal papers (physical, not PDFs). One way to "game the system" is to increase the legal costs (fees, invoices) of the other side; bombarding the other side with copious bundles of papers (sometimes literally thousands of pages, never mind if PDFs or actual papers) is a way to deny access to justice. Worse yet, it also impacts judges, who are already overworked and the courts tend to be understaffed (conservative and cautious in adding new judges), so there is a backlog of cases, which is significantly problematic in fast-moving domains because "justice delayed is justice denied" as the adage goes (if delivered late, the consequences may be limited if not inadequate).

Techrights is about rights, justice, and even legal matters (where they pertain to technology). Around 2010 we started "Techrights Legal", but it never quite took off because none of us (we're all volunteers by the way) is a lawyer. This was very well documented at the time. We also wanted to start "Techrights Canada" because of our Canadian community members/contributors. Myself, as the public face (or "release valve") of the site, is "IANAL", but yours truly can at least express in words the experience of being a Litigant in Person [1, 2], i.e. a non-lawyer in a room full of lawyers who work against me.

In yesterday's Daily Links we included (from the news) "AI ‘ghost cases’ haunt South Korean courtrooms" - an article that says "[c]ourts are increasingly calling out such false citations."

We'll have stories related to this in the future. We are openly 'anti-LLM' because it's worse than a form of plagiarism; it's wasting people's time and - in the case of justice - it serves to deny justice.

And "again," said an associate of ours, "they need to disbar the scammers or otherwise it turns into a negotiation about how much fraud the courts will allow" (or tolerate).
