    I used to travel with my laptop partly to use as a media playback/streaming device but with a USB-C mini-dock that does PD passthrough and HDMI out, my Thor is as good or better! I really do just love this thing...

    Before babbling on about my sexual frustrations again in the phlog, I mentioned my new idea for using tyres to build a car ramp to my car servicing platform, with them filled with compacted earth as in Earthship house construction. At the same time I thought up how they could be used to solve another one of my little construction problems - the driveway. This ~200m gravel track to my house keeps getting potholes, and I shovel gravel into them only for as many new ones to develop within a month or so. There are a few factors involved, but the basic problem is that the gravel just spreads out over time, and away from the high point-forces where vehicles drive over it.

    A car tyre filled with compacted earth and laid on its side could spread out the force from vehicles over a far wider area, preventing it from sinking like the gravel, while fenceposts or stainless steel wires could secure tyres to each other to prevent rows of tyres laid on the ground from drifting apart.

    To avoid vehicles digging into the compacted earth inside the tyres, before filling them with earth, pieces of flat tyre tread, cut out like I did for my carport shade flaps, can be laid in the bottom side of the tryre, against the sidewall. Earth is then compacted above this rubber barrier, before the filled tyre is flipped over so the rubber surface is at the top, creating a rubber road surface.

  • The 2026 Old Computer Challenge

    This year, I am using different hardware. I have recently bought a Compaq Netbook (I don't remember the exact model number, but I think it's related to the HP Mini 1000 series) from about 2009. While it has been expanded by a previous owner to an incredible(!) 2GB of RAM and an Intel Atom N270 running at up to 1.6GHz (though usually around 800MHz), hopefully it still classifies as old enough for the challenge. Interestingly, the screen is lower resolution than the older PC I used before (only supporting 600p instead of 768p, or even 1024p under the right OS), so this may make things harder.

      Lines in page bodies should now wrap at the word boundary before the 70th character, except for links & pre-formatted text where anything longer's intentional, if possibly unreadable for some. This won't change how the text from page templates works, but that mostly looks ok, or the meta data on a page like its title, but it's 90% of the line length problem. "Problem." The other 10% includes a possible future tweak to show different line length versions of pages. I'm thinking 70, 35 & wrap it yourself like a Twenty First Century person. But for now it's responsive text on Gemini & 70 characters on Gopher.
