The cafe was closed again, so I went to the store to get some beans. I saw on the board that today's was her memorial, or, as they like to call it around here, her celebration of life.
I've worked with Janet over the years. I don't know if we've really connected, we kept the relationship quite professional over all these years. I didn't know her connection to the ashram, and it was lovely to hear all about her life, through the words of people who loved her.

OCC DAY 02 of 07
So I gotta pick a case for my project. I have many cases, but some of them still have old, functioning hardware still in them. I prefer not to sacrifice any of them just for this project, so I will leave them be. I don't think I will be using any of the rackmount chassis as well.

Old Computer Challenge 2026, Day 2
I managed to squeeze a bit of time for the challenge today.
I started by improving my setup a bit, by installing CygnusED on the Amiga "hard drive" (a Compact Flash card in reality) and organising the Gotek USB drive so I can actually find the Amiga disk image I'm using. Gotek's system is based on ADF image file names on the USB drive, which don't necessarily have anything to do with the disk label AmigaDOS sees and displays. If they don't match, well, there lies madness.

2026 Old Computer challenge: Day 3
Well, today was a bit of a washout. It was so hot (we're in a heatwave at the moment) that I wasted large chunks of the day asleep and the little I got done on this computer involved my Fedi scripts (I've approved the followers now) and hanging out on the IRC channel. Not good. I feel like I may have to change the task/project for the week to something I'm more likely to get on with...

New dossier: War as an End in Itself
It looks at the Iran war as a case study for the military-industrial complex and permanent rearmament.

First hardware tests
My fingers miss vi's navigation commands, but I decided to use the editor this palmtop shipped with instead of the calvin vi I installed.
Today I tried to boot my flash drives with three computers. No troubleshooting or serious investigat- ion, just boot, let my kid play, shut down.
It was a solid reminder. Real hardware is where romanticism about salvage and repurposability goes to die. Computers of yesteryear, like this year's computers, cut corners and bolted on extensions. Even without wifi, there's still sound and display to be weird.
