    It is a long time since I read The Virginian, but that line has stayed with me. I remember that, before this incident, the narrator of the story is astonished by the way that the cowboys 'insulted' one another, using an obviously offensive phrase, always coyly abbreviated to just SOB in my edition of the book. He notes that the offence of the words is taken away by the humourous intent of the one using them. This is something we might take for granted in the 2020s, maybe not so much 120 years ago.

    as mentioned in a previous post, i rarely do tarot readings for myself anymore. something to do with being ok with what is/what is to come? a sort of spiritual settling? there's way less stress and worry, and even when they happen i just allow them to exist without immediately trying to solve them away. i do still handle and interact with the cards in a variety of ways, one of them being - just laying out some cards in a row, looking for patterns. sometimes this actually yields an interesting message, even if nothing is troubling me and i haven't asked a question. i find these often to be akin to what rachel pollack demonstrated in her "a walk through the forest of souls" book. readings about the nature of reality and human life in general.

  • B Roads

    Its been itching away me for a while now, ebbing and flowing but always there, this strange longing.

    The desire to get away and to explore, but to do so quietly and slowly, yet still comfortably. Away from the busy and the crowded and the peopley places. I keep eyeing B roads and unclassified roads on the map, the sort of roads where 30 mph is as fast as you safely want to go and that's pushing it. I'm in absolutely no rush and got not destination in mind, I'm happy to pull in to every passing place and let you go by.

    I'm scrolling through micro campers online, wondering how viable it is. The fantasy of it is sustaining right now, imagining how the days would go, the places I would visit and the whole time I'm thinking about the quiet places, not the tourist spots. A lonely lay by in the middle of nowhere sounds an ideal place to visit. So what if its only 3 miles away from the last place I stopped, I want to stop again. That's the sort of pace I'm talking about.

  • The history of Geometry

    A long time ago, long before real mathematics was invented by Russel and Whitehead and Bourbaki, a philosopher by the name of Euclid did a first, primitive attempt by creating geometry. He devised a system of 5 simple rules, originally intended to be a game, like the rules of chess, of which he actually took inspiration, and made a game so complex, and so utterly boring, that very few people understood. Credit where credit is due, his work was the first to point out that reality is spatial, a fact that was then taken by the egyptians and babylonians who could now use the newly invented geometry to measure land, a feat that was impossible without geometry, which literally means "land measuring".

    • FidoNet History 1

      Every year or so I rediscover FidoNet. I think it's neat, I poke around a bit and do some research into it. And then shortly afterwards, I naturally forget everything that I learned. Rinse and repeat. So this time around, I'm going to jot down some notes on my understanding of FidoNet, at least the parts that interest me. Mostly the nerdy protocol parts.

      For context, I was born in 90's and the internet of my childhood was AOL and Yahoo. This is not a firsthand account and some parts may be misunderstood.

      Another night of generating smolweb software no one else will use.

      I've been working on changing my Gemini footprint. I went from a single `molly-brown` instance, to multiple instances with `nginx` handling the host split. Then I added `kineto` to make those pages available on the big web as keeping two sets of all domains was not worth it. Tracked my page views and the numbers were nice. When I'd post to Antenna or on my Mastodon account I'd get a spike of 200 views and eventually it would go back down to a dozen a day. But over the past few months I noticed my average idle velocity was starting to creep up to the point where now I get a couple thousand hits a day. Even days where I don't post in this gemlog. After some digging around I realized that I was getting A LOT of HTTP traffic.

      A small change to the sava.rocks infrastructure today: the site is no longer available through I2P or Yggdrasil.

      I've also created an interactive Telnet server for sava.rocks. It felt like something was missing from the small-web collection. Gopher, Gemini, and Finger were all happily doing their thing, but somehow they were missing a proper Telnet server.
