    Unfortunately, my plans exceeded my ability to complete them, yet again. It has been so long that even the link aggregator I was posting these on is now gone! I have to figure out what link aggregator people use these days....

    I've been doing a lot of reading, here's two rapid fire recommedations.

  • On rationality, nihilism and acceptance

    Over the course of the last few weeks I had the opportunity to discuss a number of things with a friend, among which was the question of rationality.

    Both of us have a history of mental health issues and both of us have had episodes in which the boundaries of the rational reality and the mystical became fuzzy, if not mute.

    At this time I hadn't seen a therapist in quite some years, let alone a mental health clinic. When I was in need for a clinical intervention last time, I was still a very different person, living a very different life and believing in very different things.

    Welcome back to my stream of consciousness, friends!

    Perception of time is fun. My friends always fun of me for seemingly living in a different setting because I can never quite hit the mark on timing things, whether it be rhythm games, regular updates or just showing up to things I've scheduled myself on the exact time. Best I can tell you is that I genuinely don't know why I'm like this, but I don't plan to start "rushing" any time soon. The world can wait.

    Anyway

    I got carried away between writing the new gemlog and tinkering with one of my junker laptops, the EEE PC, for a good couple hours that it left me a little bit drained and I'm pretty sure I forgot something I wanted to tell as well. See I always wanted to make that old smelly thing useful again but if you ever had the joy of working on an EEE PC you'll know just how much of a hassle that can be. The poor thing barely has any juice in it. Some models are a little more "upgradeable" but mine's not one of them (1001HA in particular. Can get a bit more RAM but that CPU ain't moving). That thing's been a subject to my latest *Linux misadventure* as I've tried and failed to install just about any distro I could think of, in large part because the specs are just not good enough for even the lightweight distros. Puppy Linux looked like it might've broken the curse but it found a way to break the GRUB thingy despite following their instructions precisely.

    After accidentally nuking my backup [1] on the homelab and booting to a live USB, I decided I might as well reinstall my OS. It might seem heavy-handed, but I was planning on moving to NixOS at some point, and my server was already down, anyway.

    It's somewhat stable now, and I was able to replace most of my Docker compose stacks with native NixOS services with just a few lines of config.

    Moving my services that are in active development was a lot more painful though, and I wish I had just stayed with Docker for that.

      I publish very little online compared to how much I write in my notebooks and journals. I sometimes wonder why I even bother publishing anything online at all. I think I yearn to connect with people, despite for the most part being uninterested in a huge swathe of people I do encounter.

      Even this reads as if I am trying to imbue within you this idea that I am some diligent writer, utterly devoted to the craft.

      I don't feel like I have anything particularly groundbreaking or innovative to share and I especially don't think I am interesting enough to warrant a website filled with the kinds of boastful, self-aggrandising guff that fills 'about' and 'contact' pages, yet I have repeatedly indulged in this trend and I am currently doing it all again.
