Microsoft "engineers who aren’t critical are let go" this week/month (silent layoffs)
2 days ago: PIP Layoffs at Microsoft, Even in India
Yesterday: (with comment from a Microsoft insider)

There's no lack of discussion about Microsoft's silent layoffs that are happening right now. Yesterday we saw about 8 English-speaking Indian sites covering 500+ PIP layoffs in India. Microsoft has layoffs even in India. Shareholders rightly become ever more sceptical of the financial performance of the company (it lies).
The above conversation, which is very recent, focuses on the layoff criteria (they say "stack ranking"). To quote one comment: "Think the rewards are purely on visibility not the actual work one does. A lot of good engineers from my team switch and one who was left knew most of the things was laid off yesterday. This forced stack ranking sucks!!"
We wrote about stack ranking before [1, 2] and explained why it's deeply misguided an approach.
Microsoft is in disarray and very deep debt. █
