Readjusting
It took a while to get over jet lag this time. It seems like each year it takes longer and longer, which I guess is due to getting older (and older). Dealing with jet lag when you have to return to work is not a nice thing.
I can hear the rain outside again; it has been raining every day for a week. In Tokyo it's been mostly calm, but there was terrible flooding in central Japan. On the news was footage of cars and buses cutting through small waves in the middle of Nagoya, water cascading down like a waterfall in the subway, and of an otherwise tranquil river turned into raging rapids. It's quite frightening to see this new kind of weather pattern, when I look back at the last few years.

Slide rule: arbitrary exponents without the log-log scales
I was curious how one would go about solving an arbitrary exponent problem on a slide rule without those handy LL scales. I worked it out in my mind, and it is possible to solve them using only the C, D, and L scales. The C and L scales are necessary for getting the logarithm, and C and D are necessary for multiplication. Several steps are required, but the basic idea is fairly straightforward.

Access FreeBSD bhyve client desktop with Xephyr
Xephyr is a modern alternative for Xnest. It works great for accessing the destkop of virtual machines.
bhyve and vm-bhyve
FreeBSD bhyve is a great hypervisor. The package vm-bhyve makes it easy to create, install and manage virtual machines. With a bit of configuration, these virtual machines can be accessed using a VNC client. However, this is not a great experience.
