Truncated Sleep
It’s 4:00 AM. At this point it feels dangerous to try and go back to sleep when I need to get up between 5 and 6 to get the kids ready for school. Dangerous because if I fall back asleep now I might accidentally sleep in. Sure, I can set an alarm. But, what if I turn the alarm off half asleep and then go back to sleep?
I’m not the one having trouble sleeping. Yes, I’m up now writing this post, but I’m only awake because my son couldn’t sleep. I had to get up and give him a snack, water, and send him back to bed.

gentle moon
A gentle full moon.
Waking up early this weekend, I saw the full moon over the mountains.
Something wants to awaken in me, I am restraining it. You're getting enlightened! No I need to clean my room first. The trip on the mountain didn't happen by accident. Something, somewhere wanted me to have that experience. Something pushed me in the right direction.
I'm at a crossroad. Whether you do it the hard way, or the gentle way. I feel like I'm grasping at the rocks on the side of the river while being dragged into the current. A memory of falling in the river while hiking to the canyon.

Note from September 26th, 2026
The Nvidia-branded sand heist(1) is a decent work of science fiction, but I’d have preferred the thieves be rogue autonomous tractors from a competing firm. And maybe tell the story using the trendy “lessons learned from our software breaking the law” press release trope.

Plain text progress
I've made a couple of tweaks to my plain text system as I continue to try to get out from under big-tech's shadow.

I've been a pain the rear-end to my treasurer over the years, because I've really not been good at getting my monthly expenses claims in on time. (My wife doesn't like it either!) But I think I've found the remedy in a csv file and a little script that can be used to add expense items and generate the excel claims file that the treasurer likes at the end of the month. I'm hesitant to sound too certain, but I've been using it to "do my expenses" as part of a daily routine throughout this month, rather than sitting down with a spreadsheet at the end of the month, and so far it feels like it has much less friction.

Community versus growth [Ed: Stupid thing to say]
I'm wondering if Gemini would grow in popularity as AI improves. It's one of the few places on the internet that's (mostly) humans and without commercial pressure.

Community versus growth
Turns out, in my three or four years of absence, I missed some interesting developments. However, growth during this time has been glacial. We're still small enough to only need one forum. One. That's like being on Usenet circa 1990. Sure enough, the attitude isn't far off. Hope y'all are enjoying the peace and quiet.
