The Metric is Not the Mission
"Passing Thoughts" by Andy
"I'd like to recommend The Metric is not the Mission. It's a serialised major essay by Atlantic Council writer Konstantinos Komaitis under the editorship of Mike Masnick at Techdirt. Komaitis is a good writer and pulls together a comprehensive (long but justifiably thorough) summary of why he thinks US-led technology went off the tracks. We certainly don't agree with all of it but it intersects with themes we've covered with John Gall's Systemantics, and Dana Meadows Systems Thinking, particularly around the conceit that systems can be usefully guided only by their own measurements. Notably Komaitis captures the extremely involuted nature of US tech, which by strongly influencing society, culture and politics around it, alters the very meaning of its measurements - and then interprets them favourably for itself. This allowed Big Tech to effectively define the rules and parameters under which it operates in society, changing laws and eventually even governments. Komaitis concludes with a little bit of hope for escaping this bubble." █
