sick for halloween
The Moon is Waning Gibbous (57% of Full)
I like this new automated line on top of my phlog entries. Almost half way to the new moon.
I am sick today. Since Friday morning, I felt it in my sinuses. I don't mind being sick. It's a different state where I need more rest. I enjoy rainy days, like sunny days.
I've got back into producing psytrance on my dawless setup. I'm tempted to use a DAW mostly for the visual continuation, something that is hard to 'see' when producing only dawless. I don't see the progression of the work I do, it's somewhat hidden.

MangoWM is nice
I was having some ram issues on my T480 lately. It only has 8GB of RAM, but even doing a bunch of simultaneous things I made it several months before I ever had a problem. But recently I’ve had a few crashes because the OOM killer shot it in face. Today I spun up a thing to track ram use. Kitty and Sway were my biggest users of ram at around 70M. But then I launched qutebrowser, played a video, killed it, jumped between pages of the UI, and checked in again. 300M that didnt free up after qutebrowser was closed. That’s weird. Other notable processes were the guile-scheme instances that would spawn as a result of package building and such. I have historical tracking with the ram, so I see they spawn over time and go away but they tend not to go over 300M either. The biggest memory hog is the most likely leaking Sway.
Launched a few more terminals, reconnected to various remote messengers – these are things not even running locally, they’re all ssh endpoints – and my RAM use for JUST sway was over 1G. When it reached 2.5G within the hour I started looking to see what was in the Guix package selection. I ran niri for a little bit, but niri can’t run qutebrowser or any other QT apps. I then tried dwl – talk about weird key bindings by default (and they’re compiled in!) – but abanoned that because it also couldn’t run qutebrowser. I remembered hearing about Mango a few days ago, but I didn’t actually go looking for that. Instead I was going to guix edit dwl so I could figure out where it pulled it source from and start editing the package to change the key bindings when I noticed mangowm right there in the same definition!

qutebrowser and codeberg
codeberg doesn’t like older versions of chrome. They used to let you view project pages, now they don’t even do that. Picking a different user agent in qutebrowser gets around the problem. I just did :set user and then picked the user agent option and then set the value to whatever the alternative was that had Linux in the name.

october 2026 update
Hallowe'en is a good time for spooky and/or tricksy things, so here's an update on plugh, the procedurally generated dungeon crawler that I'm working to bring to Gemini.
You may remember that the game is a work in progress; in my previous post, I shared some of the features that I feel already make it ready for a pre-alpha release.

introducing plugh
