Do-No-Evil Saturday - Part II: SCO, GWAVA, and Some Minor Developments

The past week has not been a congested and busy one. Here are some news that remained uncovered.

SCO

As always, Groklaw is on top of things. Vigilance had PJ suspect that the next major hearing will take place in on September 16th. She could later confirm this. She also adds:

According to SCO, the Stephen Norris deal is still being worked on, though they say now it might be either a buyout or a loan after all, and it hints at others potentially interested in funding SCO. But they want some clarity on when the appeal will be entered.

Does that make sense to you? After all, SCO mentions a figure of potential claims against SCO in the amount of $96 million, above and beyond what it owes Novell. Should it get an extension until all the claims against SCO are decided? Now, *that* would be clarity. Why is an interest calculation on $3 million or so and a date for a filed notice of appeal enough to give potential backers a feeling of finality, with so much to come? There is a much bigger cloud waiting on the horizon than anything Novell ever represented.

The Salt Lake Tribune also had this update about the SCO case:

In a court filing late Monday, SCO said Novell has not submitted a proposed final judgment in the case that would allow SCO to appeal an adverse ruling. The extension will give SCO and Novell time to resolve issues and have a final judgment entered, SCO said.

CTO Blog

Jeff Jaffe has this this new post, but it appears to have come from Ian Bruce (ibruce), Novell's new PR person. Maybe it's for technical reasons.

NetWare

Yes, Novell is still harping about this aging technology.

I was recently in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, to meet with customers and partners. A particular meeting called out the power of leveraging our install base. One of our partners has been working closely with a department of the federal government to maximize the return on their existing investment in Novell products. They leveraged features such as Virtual Office, the Identity Manager Starter Pack, and ZENworks Dynamic Local user; seemingly trivial features that they had previously overlooked in our products, to build what they called the PSS project or Password Self-Service.

Marketing

Advertisements have appeared out of nowhere and landed in YouTube (example 1 and example 2), possibly as part of an initiative from Novell or a business partner (Richard Bliss was doing this for sure). They have also advertised quite a lot in ComputerWorld recently.

Identity Management

ActivIdentity lists Novell as a partner.

The company works with world class partners such as EDS, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Novell, and Sun Microsystems.

GWAVA/GroupWise

Lots of press releases here. This is the first one from GWAVA.

GWAVA, Novell's largest technology partner for GroupWise, has announced an agreement with Vircom, a leader in email security solutions, to sell and support their modusGate product line. The product line was previously marketed in the GroupWise market as GWGuardian, an OEM version of modusGate, to existing GWGuardian, MXGuardian or M+Guardian customers.

This one is about a new partnership

GWAVA, Novell's largest technology partner for GroupWise, along with Netcleanse Technologies Inc. and Vircom, today announced a wide-ranging strategic business and technical partnership to build and market solutions that work well with each other.

GroupWise earns support from OutIndex.

OutIndex (www.OutIndex.com), the leading electronic discovery software company in Europe, today announced a new professional services offering supporting Novell GroupWise extraction and processing for GroupWise versions 5.x and above. OutIndex provides this service at the company's London, UK and New York City, US offices.

The Apple iPhone also gets some GroupWise love.

Notify Technology Corporation, today announced that its NotifyLink Enterprise Edition for Novell GroupWise will now support the Apple iPhone 3G and all iPhones and iPod touch devices once upgraded with the new iPhone 2.0. The NotifyLink Enterprise Edition for Novell GroupWise will extend the enterprise functionality of the iPhone and iPod touch to include support for the wireless synchronization of Novell GroupWise email and PIM (calendar, personal address book, and global address book).

Here is another new example where Novell earns its place between Microsoft and IBM.

SECNAP(R) Network Security Corporation today announced addition of the newest feature to its award-winning Email Security Gateway Powered by SpammerTrap(R). The Email Archiving enhancement enables clients to archive both incoming and outgoing mail, and is compatible with virtually all messaging systems including Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise.

iFolder is an interesting name because it's actually a Novell project and not an Apple brand (Apple is notorious for policing the use of a small "i"). It's not really about mail folders, but it seems related enough.

StorMagic SM Series supports Novell applications, which was extremely important for Ruby. “We are also looking at a new service using Novell iFolder€® to synchronize data across servers. A user can have folders at one location that the iFolder client will automatically copy to another location so you can work at home and school or the office — one more reason to appreciate StorMagic’s scalability.”

Security

Look who suffers from Microsoft's severe security flaws and patches..

Greg Lambert, technology director, ChangeBASE AOK, said: "The results of our tests show many applications have dependencies on the Security update for IE7 - for example versions of WinZip, Novell Client and Oracle applications."

It's quite a recurrent event.
