Last I heard, LPRng did not read The Usual /etc/printcap files, quite.

That in itself is fine, there's a lot of room for improvement in BSD
printsystem.

Would it be feasible to modify LPRng to allow it to read The Usual
printcap files, however?

We've been using a "printcap.m4" system (you may have seen this on the
LPRng list, I wrote it) to get consistent printcap's across our Sun, DEC
and SGI systems - and soon, hopefully, our Debian GNU Linux systems as
well.

That is, IMO there's a solid reason to make the LPRng /etc/printcap
format a strict superset of the traditional /etc/printcap format.

Now hopefully this is all a non-issue, and I'm just making myself look
silly.  :)  Maybe it already reads a reasonable subset of the standard
format, like: lp, if, sd, lf, rm, rp and rg?
