Everything started in 2006 as “Boycott Novell” — an action rooted in Novell’s patent collusion with Microsoft. The subject remains unaddressed because even though Novell is no longer around Microsoft’s strategy carries on, albeit in some evolved form like infiltrating_other companies and the Linux_Foundation. “Everything started in 2006 as “Boycott Novell” — an action rooted in Novell’s patent collusion with Microsoft.”We must do more to highlight the severity of this situation because Microsoft sinks a lot of money into revisionism, distortion, and perception management (not just in sites it controls directly but also rags such as ZDNet). There’s a similar problem at the EPO; Benoît_Battistelli sank million of euros into abuse of the media (legal bullying and bribery) — a tradition that most certainly continues under António_Campinos. It was the subject of the media file_(video)_we_made_this_morning. We must confront false narratives! “We must confront false narratives!”This unscripted rambling (above) mentions the common phenomenon about people running out of video topics to cover (we have over 1,000 videos in this site, about 500 of them since we started making many of our own back in December) and explains the unique nature of things we plan to cover because we don’t like merely parroting what’s already well covered (or poorly covered) elsewhere. In the video I’ve mentioned along the way that media coverage regarding software patents in the US and in_Europe mostly vanished. It happened years ago. The EFF also put its sword down and stopped fighting, even though TechDirt occasionally brings that up again. We definitely intend to continue covering this very important topic. A key person who dealt with it died_12_days_ago, just like Pieter_Hintjens. “We moreover need to re-engineer or change the topology of things in order to lessen collective reliance on social control media (misinformation, censorship), centralisation (monopoly), and all sorts of artificial barriers put in place and cemented by patents.”When people stop confronting a falsehood (a surrender to lies, due to fatigue) we quit having access to the simple truth and, accordingly, lies become ‘normalised’. Such as the lie that the EPO runs smoothly under Team Campinos, Microsoft is a reformed company that “loves Linux”, and GitHub is good for “Open Source” (heck, even “Open Source” itself turns out to have been a lie, spun off as a marketing ploy by openwashing of everything proprietary). Recently the community jumped from one disaster to the next (gradual_death_of Freenode, attacks on the FSF/GPL, demise of the so-called ‘Open Web’) and so we need more lifeboats and contingencies. We moreover need to re-engineer or change the topology of things in order to lessen collective reliance on social control media (misinformation, censorship), centralisation (monopoly), and all sorts of artificial barriers put in place and cemented by patents. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 143 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2021/07/23/epo-fire/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2021/07/23/epo-fire/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 07.23.21⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ ✐ Where_There’s_Smoke…⠀✐ Posted in Europe, Patents at 3:27 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz Video_download_link | md5sum 34e24026293d7327ee8e095d51596c46 http://techrights.org/videos/epo-news-fodder.webm Summary: Recent events in and around the EPO (with deficient media coverage or none at all) make one wonder why the EPO’s management writes several shallow “news” postings per day THE past few days have not been eventful, except in the minds of Team Campinos at the EPO. This wasn’t our intention, but that’s just the nature of IRC and how it works. To avoid depending on proprietary software (GitHub), ranging from proprietary platform to proprietary JavaScript, we’ve made a_local (plain text) version of the IRC manuals. We currently use ergo, which is written in Go and has thus far been very reliable. One new channel that we’ve adopted as semi-official is #TechPol (for politics) — a channel whose purpose is to sort of offload more political or less tech- focused discussions, removing them from the main channel, which is #TechRights. We hope this can help enhance and improve the signal/noise (s/n) ratio in the main channel. Some of the other channels are used to document relevant communications and links that later go into Daily Links. Similar to the Windows-on- ARM initiative, SiFive promised to deliver a general use PC platform that would allow software developers to adapt the Windows and Linux-based code for the RISC- V processors. It only took SiFive a few months to launch its first PC motherboard called the HiFive Unmatched, which is based on the U7 SoC. However, since the RISC- V community is not that big, development on the PC platform is not exactly fast. Interestingly enough, Nvidia recently managed to enable RTX 3000 support for ARM-based laptops, and, almost at the same time, a RISC- V enthusiast managed to make an AMD RX 6700 XT work on Linux-based HiFive Unmatched system. This is essentially a double milestone for the RISC- V community. Hackster.io reports that computer scientist René Rebe first managed to make the HiFive Unmatched run Linux, and then added support for the Radeon RX 6700 XT GPU through the Mesa Gallium 21.1.5 driver. Apparently, the U7 SoC is not properly supported in Linux, but Rebe was able to work his magic and patched the Linux kernel to support both the RISC-V architecture and the RDNA2 GPU in around 10 hours. The GPU is not fully functional as of yet. It can display the GUI, can render 3D graphics in accelerated-mode and also decode hi-res videos, but cannot run games. Nevertheless, this is still an impressive achievement that is not facilitated by the SiFive team itself. o § Desktop/Laptop⠀➾ # ⚓ System76:_Laptops,_Servers,_and_PCs_Optimized_for_Linux_and Open-Source_Solutions⠀⇛ Despite a lineage that predates Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS, the Linux operating system has struggled to gain traction in the mass commercial market. That challenge extends not only to the software but also to the dedicated hardware optimized to maximize the benefits of Linux on desktops and laptops. Linux was initially popular with tech enthusiasts, but the commercial PC industry skewed toward Windows and Intel consumer hardware. Part of the challenge for Linux related to its early lack of dedicated hardware solutions. The founders of System76 set out to make the Linux ecosystem more inviting by integrating the hardware and software components to provide consumers with easy access to desktops and laptops. # ⚓ Jon_McDonald:_How_System76_paves_the_way_for_Linux_hardware adoption⠀⇛ System76 has found its footing in an industry largely geared towards Windows users. Tests by those involved found that in some conditions Linux kernel builds for example could be up to 7% faster. Given the recent folios v14 patches being published, I took them for a spin on an AMD EPYC server to see the impact on overall performance. Memory folios are being worked on by Oracle and it’s possible at least some of the patches may come for the 5.15 kernel. Given the work stabilizing now over fourteen rounds of review and the possibility at least some of the patches going mainline soon, recently I did some benchmarks of Linux 5.14-rc1 against the Matthew Wilcox’s “folio_14″ Git branch at the time while otherwise building the same kernel configuration with just looking at the impact of the folios work. # ⚓ Overcoming_the_headaches_of_managing_your_own_VPS_server ⠀⇛ Unmanaged VPS hosting brings loads of benefits if you have the technical know-how # ⚓ Rackspace_literally_decimates_workforce:_One_in_ten staffers_let_go_this_week_•_The_Register⠀⇛ o § Audiocasts/Shows⠀➾ # ⚓ Nostalgia_and_efficiency_–_MATE_Desktop_Tour⠀⇛ It’s time we started taking a look at MATE, the last major desktop environment I have never used. New features in mksquashfs include the ability to use the “sqfstar” command to generate SquashFS images from tar archives, and the option to reduce the load on the CPU and I / O using mksquashfs. But here are some fresh benchmarks for those interested while using the latest-generation Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card paired with the in-development Linux 5.14 kernel across testing both Vulkan drivers. Today’s benchmarking is a fresh look at how the AMDVLK 2021.Q3.1 driver (the latest at the time of testing) compares to the latest RADV driver within Mesa 21.3-devel. RADV was tested twice both out-of- the-box and then again when enabling the new NGG culling (NGGC) option. Linux 5.14-rc1 was running while testing both AMD Radeon Vulkan drivers from this Ryzen 9 5900X system with the Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card. o § Applications⠀➾ # ⚓ Top_5_Linux_Shells_That_You_Can_Use_in_Your_Daily_Work⠀⇛ There are many shells available for Linux, but in this article, we only include the top five Linux shells and thoroughly discuss their features. It all started with a user reminding us that Kerberos authentication is broken when Foreman is deployed on CentOS 8, as there is no more mod_auth_kerb available. Given mod_auth_kerb hasn’t seen a release since 2013, this is quite understandable. Thankfully, there is a replacement available, mod_auth_gssapi. Even better, it’s available in CentOS 7 and 8 and in Debian and Ubuntu too! So I quickly whipped up a PR to completely replace mod_auth_kerb with mod_auth_gssapi in our installer and successfully tested that it still works in CentOS 7 (even if upgrading from a mod_auth_kerb installation) and CentOS 8. # ⚓ [Older]_How_To_Install_MariaDB_10.5_on_Ubuntu_20.04⠀⇛ MariaDB is one of the most popular open-source databases next to its originator MySQL. Port forwarding is a valuable tool for debugging different applications and deployments in the Kubernetes cluster. For illustration, if one of your pods is acting strangely, you will need to link to it directly. As this is a microservice setting, you can utilize port forwarding to communicate with a back-end service that would otherwise be hidden. The Kubelet delivers all information entered into the stream to the destination pod and port. When designing Kubernetes applications, it’s common to wish for immediate use of a service from the surrounding environment without exposing it via a load balancer or perhaps an ingress resource. We can use kubectl to create a proxy that forwards all traffic from a local port to a port linked to our chosen Pod. The kubectl port-forward instruction can be utilized to accomplish this. The kubectl port-forward sends an appeal to the Kubernetes API. That implies the machine that runs it requires access to the API server, and all communication is tunneled through a single HTTP connection. By passing one (or more) local ports to a pod, we can access container content with this command. This command performs effectively when you are required to debug a malfunctioning pod. We are going to talk about a step-by-step method to check port forwarding using kubectl. # ⚓ Kubectl_Get_Events_To_Sort_By_Time_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ While other resources have changes, errors, or other notifications that should be broadcasted to the system, Kubernetes events are generated automatically. There is not so much documentation on events, but they are a great help when troubleshooting problems in your Kubernetes cluster. When compared to many other Kubernetes objects, events have a lot of activity. Events have a one-hour life period by default, and a distinct etcd cluster is advised for scalability. Events on their own, when combined with the inability to filter or aggregate, may not be particularly valuable unless they are transferred to external systems. Kubernetes events are entities that inform you what’s going on inside a cluster, like the scheduler’s decisions and why some pods were ejected from a node. The API Server allows all key components and extensions (operators) to generate events. When something is not operating as planned, the first area to check at is events and network operations. If the failure is the outcome of earlier events or when performing post-mortem analysis, keeping them for a longer duration is critical. Kubernetes generates events every time any of the resources it manages changes. The entity that initiated the event, the kind of event, and the cause are generally included in these events. Now to sort events by time, you have to follow the appended steps described in this tutorial. # ⚓ Introduction_to_Manjaro_Package_Manager_Pacman_–_Linux Hint⠀⇛ The Linux distributions package management system has covered a long way. See https://wiki.debian.org/ ReleasePartyBullseye for more information. The final weeks up to the release ================================= In the last week prior to the freeze, testing will be completely frozen and only emergency bug fixes will be considered in this period. Please consider Tuesday the 2021-08-03 at 12: 00 UTC the absolute last moment for submitting unblock requests for bullseye. Changes that are not ready to migrate to testing at that time will not be included in bullseye for the initial release. However, you can still fix bugs in bullseye via point releases if the changeset follows the rules for updates in stable. Starting now, we will be even more strict when considering unblock requests. Please check the details below and make sure to only upload well-tested *targeted* fixes. In summary: vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv * **Unblock request** deadline: > 2021-08- 03 12:00 UTC < ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - You must submit your unblock request *before* then - Your changes must be ready to migrate to bullseye at that time - Upload several days *before* the deadline * If a change is late, it may still be applicable for an update via a point release after bullseye has been released. * Please note that the automatic removals are still in effect and may still remove packages up to that date. Also, some packages will be removed manually before the auto-removal deadline. Please fix bugs today rather than shortly before the deadline. Simple mistakes (no manner how trivial) or busy buildd queue can end up causing your upload to miss the bullseye release. Future updates to bullseye up to the freeze =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= As we are entering the final part of the freeze, please keep future changes and unblock requests limited to: * targeted fixes for release critical bugs (i.e., bugs of severity critical, grave, and serious); * fixes for severity: important bugs, only when this can be done via unstable; * translation updates and documentation fixes, only when this can be done via unstable (preferably bundled with a fix for at least one of the problems listed above and nothing else) * updates to packages directly related to the release process (i.e. with references to the current layout of the archive), only when this can be done via unstable; We will only accept targeted fixes. Currently Ubuntu Touch doesn’t support VoLTE/ 4G but considering 2G and 3G networks around the world are beginning to be disbanded, they need to begin towards supporting at least 4G. In the United States and elsewhere network operators are beginning to dismantle their 2G/3G networks and thus Ubuntu Touch needs to quickly catch up in handling VoLTE/4G to remain relevant. The UBports Foundation has contracted Sysmocom to begin working on the software support so VoLTE ultimately can work under Ubuntu Touch when running on phones with capable hardware and firmware. # ⚓ On_the_way_towards_VoLTE_support_in_Ubuntu_Touch⠀⇛ You can make phone calls with Ubuntu Touch on various phones, but one particular gap is support for VoLTE. The UBports Foundation has commissioned an investigation into what’s needed to add this support, and we now have the results. VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE, and LTE (Long Term Evolution) is better known as 4G. So essentially, VoLTE amounts to mobile calls over a 4G network. This has various advantages compared to calling over 2G or 3G, such as lower delays while talking to each other and better audio quality. # ⚓ UBPorts_plans_to_bring_VoLTE_and_Voice_over_WiFi support_to_Ubuntu_Touch⠀⇛ Most smartphones have the hardware necessary to make Voice over LTE (VoLTE) calls, delivering lower latency and better audio quality than phone calls that don’t use the technology. If you’re using an Android or iOS phone, then all you need to take advantage of VoLTE is a mobile network that supports the feature. But if you’re running Linux on your phone? You’ll also need a GNU/Linux distribution that supports VoLTE. One maker who goes by mcp on YouTube took this idea one step further and created a fish that can swim in the water like the actual creature. By carefully analyzing and studying the patterns a fish makes while it scurries through a lake, he was able to reduce these motions down to just a few joints. The body of this DIY robotic fish was constructed from a series of four joints that each contain a single mini servo motor to control their movements. Next, an Arduino Nano was selected as the microcontroller board due to its small size and ample amounts of GPIO pins. In order for the fish to sense if there is an obstacle in the way and avoid it, the device also features “eyes” that utilize IR emitter/receiver pairs. # ⚓ Meet_your_new_table_tennis_coach,_a_tinyML-powered paddle!⠀⇛ Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, Samuel Alexander and his housemates purchased a ping pong set and began to play — a lot. Because of this, he was inspired to create a smart paddle that uses an integrated IMU to intelligently classify which moves he makes and correct his form to improve it over time. Alexander went with the Nano 33 BLE Sense board due to its ease of use and tight integration with TensorFlow Lite Micro, not to mention the onboard 6DOF accelerometer/ gyroscope module. He began by designing a small cap that fits over the bottom of a paddle’s handle and contains all the electronics and battery circuitry. Sometimes we need to split the string data for programming purposes. The split() function exists in many programming languages to divide the string into multiple parts. There is no built-in split() function in C++ for splitting string but many multiple ways exist in C++ to do the same task, such as using getline() function, strtok() function, using find() and erase() functions, etc. The uses of these functions to split strings in C++ have been explained in this tutorial. # ⚓ Do_while_in_c_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ Loops in C are divided into two parts. One is the loop body, and the other is the control statement. Each loop is unique in its way. Do while loop is alike to a while loop in some aspects. In this loop, firstly, all the statements inside the body are executed. In case the condition is true, then the loop is again executed until the condition becomes false. In this guide, we will shed some light on the examples of do-while loops. # ⚓ C++_class_constructors_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ Constructors are like functions. These are used to initialize the values and the objects of the class. These constructors are initiated when the object of a class is created. Constructor directly does not return any value. To get the value of the constructor, we need to describe a separate function as the constructor doesn’t have any return type. Constructor differs from the simple function in different ways. A constructor is created when the object is generated. It is defined in the public segment of the class. In this article, we will deliberate on all these types of constructors with examples. # § Python⠀➾ # ⚓ with_Statement_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ The Python with statement is a very advanced feature that helps to implement the context management protocol. When the programmer starts coding, they are basically using the try/except/finally to maintain the resources. But there is another way to do this automatically, called the ‘with’ statement. So, in this article, we will discuss how we can use the ‘with‘ statement. We can understand this with a very simple example. Whenever we code something to read or write a file, the first thing which we have to do is to open the file, and then we perform the read or write operations on that and, at last, we close the file so that all the resources will not be busy. So it means that we have to release the resource after we complete our work. # ⚓ Assembly_of_Python_External_C++_procedure returning_the_value_of_string_type⠀⇛ Writing C++ procedure below we get a final answer as C++ string , then via sequence of operations which convert string to the pointer (say c) to “const char” and finally return required value via pointer to PyObject provided by PyUnicode_FromString(c) to Python Runtime module. # § Java⠀➾ # ⚓ Comparing_Strings_in_Java_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ It is easier to understand the comparison of characters before learning the comparison of string literals. A comparison of strings is given below this introduction. With Java, characters are represented in the computer by integers (whole numbers). Comparing characters means comparing their corresponding numbers. With Java, uppercase A to uppercase Z are the integers from 65 to 90. A is 65, B is 66, C is 67, until Z, which is 90. Lowercase ‘a’ to lowercase ‘z’ are the integers from 97 to 122. ‘a’ is 97, ‘b’ is 98, ‘c’ is 99, until ‘z,’ which is 122. Decimal digits are the integers, 48 to 57. That is, ‘0’ is 48, ‘1’ is 49, ‘2’ is 50, until 9, which is 57. So, in this new order, digits come first before uppercase letters, which come next before lowercase letters. Before the digits, there is the bell, which is a sounding and not a printable character. Its number is 7. There is the tab character of the keyboard, whose number is 9. There is the newline character (pressing the Enter key), whose number is 10. There is the space character (pressing the space-bar key), whose number is 32. There is the exclamation character, whose number is 33. There is the forward-slash character, whose number is 47. ‘(’ has the number, 40 and ‘)’ has the number, 41. # ⚓ How_to_use_HashMap_in_Java_–_Linux_Hint⠀⇛ The column on the left has the keys, and the column on the right has the corresponding values. Diving deep into the etymology of the word ‘cryptography’ shows that this word finds its origin in ancient Greek. Derived from words kryptos meaning “hidden” or “secret” and graphy meaning “writing”, cryptography literally means writing something secretly. The idea of cryptography is to convey a private message or piece of information from the sender party to the intended recipient without getting the message intruded on by a malicious or untrusted party. In the world of cryptography, this suspicious third party that is trying to sneak into a private communication to extract something sensitive out of it is called an adversary. o § Hardware⠀➾ # ⚓ Arm_Researchers_Announce_The_PlasticArm_|_Hackaday⠀⇛ o § Integrity/Availability⠀➾ # § Proprietary⠀➾ # § Security⠀➾ # ⚓ Security_updates_for_Friday⠀⇛ Security updates have been issued by Arch Linux (chromium, curl, impacket, jdk11-openjdk, jre-openjdk, jre- openjdk-headless, jre11-openjdk- headless, kernel, lib32-curl, lib32- libcurl-compat, lib32-libcurl-gnutls, libcurl-compat, libcurl-gnutls, libpano13, linux-hardened, linux-lts, linux-zen, nvidia-utils, opera, systemd, and virtualbox), CentOS (java- 11-openjdk and kernel), Debian (lemonldap-ng), Fedora (curl and podman), Gentoo (icedtea-web and velocity), openSUSE (bluez, go1.15, go1.16, kernel, thunderbird, transfig, and wireshark), Oracle (java-1.8.0- openjdk, java-11-openjdk, kernel, and kernel-container), SUSE (bluez, curl, kernel, qemu, thunderbird, transfig, and wireshark), and Ubuntu (curl). # ⚓ Holes_in_Linux_Kernel_Could_Pose_Problems_for Red_Hat,_Ubuntu,_Other_Distros⠀⇛ A pair of vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel disclosed this week expose major Linux operating systems that could let a hacker either gain root privileges on a compromised host or shut down the entire OS altogether. # ⚓ Systemd_Vulnerability_Could_Risk_Denial-of- Service_Across_Major_Linux_Systems⠀⇛ # ⚓ Microsoft_warns_over_this_unusual_malware_that targets_Windows_and_Linux [Ed: ZDNet’s Microsoft booster Liam Tung speaks as if Microsoft now owns and controls Linux. This is their first keyboard though, designed and created by the American (Colorado) company at their own facilities but it’s not the first hardware they’ve directly done either with that being the Thelio desktops. Why is GECOS such a unicorn topic for Linux folk? I think it’s because sysadmins refer to it as GECOS without knowing the acronym’s meaning or its original purpose. Sysadmins refer to this /etc/passwd file information as the User Comment field. User comment makes it sound like something that is user-editable and is open to change on a whim. How often do you get one of those things that is personal, delivered just for you that wasn’t done by automation? Have you ever wondered what life would be like a little over 1,000 years from now? You might think everything at that point is just automation. You might even think technology would be out of hand. Dangerous, even. Well, that’s the setting of Horizon Zero Dawn. The earth is dominated by robots, called machines. They resemble very closely to their animal counterparts, from their appearance to their behavior, ranging from dinosaurs, hawks, deer, giraffes, alligators, tigers, among many others. But they’re in machine-form. Once at peace with man, they have turned on them for the worse — now they kill everything they see on sight. And now, with the verge of the death of all humanity because of these machines, there’s only one prospect that can save them — Project Zero Dawn. # ⚓ Steam_Deck:_Linux_gaming_made_easy_–_Market_Research Telecast⠀⇛ Valve Software has been promoting Linux as a gaming platform for many years without a fuss. With the Steam Deck, a lot more people will suddenly be playing Linux from December – and if in doubt they won’t even notice anything. Because gaming under Linux is no longer a big deal – if you don’t want to play AAA titles with anti-cheat software, of all things. So the question arises: what is possible and what are the limitations? The Steam client for Linux has been available since 2013, and Valve ported all of their own games such as Counter-Strike: Source, Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal to Linux shortly thereafter. With the development of the Wine fork Proton, which has been integrated into the Steam client since 2018, the Linux game world has become much bigger: What was previously fiddly, now runs with a click of the mouse in the Steam client. # ⚓ Faster_Zombies_to_Steam_Deck:_The_History_of_Valve_and Linux_Gaming_|_GamingOnLinux⠀⇛ It’s hard to imagine that it’s now been around 9 years since Valve confirmed that the Steam Client would be coming to Linux, after previously denying it was happening back in 2010 in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Things were pretty quiet until much later in July 2012 when it would all be confirmed. Valve opened up their special Linux blog to talk about their plans, where they said Gabe Newell had directly been interested in getting Steam and the Source game engine to Linux. During July 2012 it was also the time that Valve’s Gabe Newell mentioned his intense dislike for Windows 8, saying very clear and bluntly how “I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.”. After that, their now quite famous (amongst Linux users) blog post titled Faster Zombies! appeared in August 2012 to talk about getting their games performing well on Linux, to the point that they mentioned it ran better with OpenGL than on Windows 7 with Direct3D. # ⚓ OpenRCT2_the_reimplementation_for_RollerCoaster_Tycoon_2 has_a_fun_update_|_GamingOnLinux⠀⇛ Another wonderful open source game engine reimplementation has a major upgrade. GNOME 40 on the other hand had a slew of updates that focused on updating translations and bug fixing. A regression was fixed in the 40.3 gnome-maps package and the 40.3 gnome- software package fixed a crash that sometimes happened when clicking on a website button on a details page. Another crash that was fixed in gnome-terminal 3.40.3 affected the loading of the reference schema source, which failed. One key enabler of a productive, engaged, and innovative team in this in-between arrangement is asynchronous working. “Working asynchronously simply means that we don’t all have to work in the same place at the same time in order to work together,” says Brian Abrahamson, CIO and the associate laboratory director for communications and IT at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Lab. One problem: “Many of us brought our old ways of working to Teams and Zoom when the pandemic hit.” Sounds simple – but it’s not necessarily innate. “Many of us brought our old ways of working to Teams and Zoom when the pandemic hit,” notes Abrahamson. At the same, though, many technology organizations have made huge progress in digital work and remote collaboration. The age of the virtual workplace forced people to modify how, where, and even when they work. “Today, instead of collaborating in real time – walking to the next cubicle to ask a question – remote work has forced us to become more independent and to rely even more on technology as our primary communication,” says Jason James, CIO of EHR software and analytics provider Net Health. # ⚓ The_Ceph_open_source_community:_Powering_Red_Hat’s data_services_portfolio⠀⇛ One of the unique things about Red Hat is that everything we do is open source. Aside from providing tools to manage (or orchestrate) the containers you run, Kubernetes also helps those containers scale out as needed. With Kubernetes as your central control panel (or control plane), you need a way to manage Kubernetes, and the tool for that job is kubectl. The kubectl command lets you control, maintain, analyze, and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters. As with many tools using the ctl (short for “control”) suffix, such as systemctl and sysctl, kubectl has purview over a broad array of functions and tasks, so you end up using it a lot if you’re running Kubernetes. According to Reuters, SoftBank stopped manufacturing Pepper robots at some point last year due to low demand. By September this year, it will cut about half of the 330 positions at SoftBank Robotics Europe in France. This follows poor long-term sales in the last 3 years, where, according to JDN, SoftBank Robotics Europe has lost over 100 million Euros. Whether you like it or not, Pepper left its mark in the robotics world. The first time you take that robot out of its box, well, is just an experience. Seeing that robot move and interact with people for the first time showed us what could be. Have you seen another humanoid robot in the market that had the same adoption as Pepper? Or even the same autonomy? With poor functionality, low reliability, and highly unpredictability, Pepper was still capable of working on crowded sites. Stores, banks, offices, conferences, it was there. You cannot say the same of others. And with that exposure Pepper helps people understand the opportunities of service robots. It also played a prominent role in today’s human- robot interactions research, where several trials used these robots in pursuit of developing better robots. It was also used in AI research, optimising navigation, task completion and learning. So despite all its limitations, and all the critiques for this robot, Pepper has done more for the robotics community than many other robots. # ⚓ How_to_install_OBS_Studio_on_Ubuntu_20.04_or_Linux Mint_20.2⠀⇛ Here we will let you know how to install latest version of OBS Studio on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS including Linux Mint and other similar operating systems. Since infection numbers are increasing at an alarming rate the blanket approach they are convinced is not working. Besides, the accelerated transmission is caused by a new variant of the virus which will happen even if a targeted approach is adopted. Apparently, these people’s views on Cuba count for a great deal. So much so, that some publications have reported on how the Democrats are seizing on the protests as an opportunity to win back Cuban-American voters in Florida. These reports remind us that this formerly neck-and-neck swing state went for Trump in both the 2016 and 2020, in no small part due to his administration’s toughened stance on Cuba and close relationship with Cuban-American hardliners like Marco Rubio. Politico, for example, tells its readers that Biden’s Cuba policy going forward “could have a big political impact in a state where Democrats are reeling” and that “Florida Democrats see what many are calling a “golden opportunity.”” As with US intervention, this is presented in corporate media accounts as a perfectly natural and reasonable thing to do. But upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that something is very seriously amiss. Little importance was then given by most, including media blowing trumpets about this democratic ploy, to how can democratic revolution – which begins from grass-roots – be exported into any other country? That too into nations with fairly different cultural norms. And, pray, wherein lies the linkage between democracy and use of weapons- whether by internal or by external sources? One understands democracy as voice for the people, of the people and for the people. He’s also channeling the deepest fears of the slavers and colonists who wrote the Constitution. What works for the moderation of text and video doesn’t neatly translate into VR. In late June, Facebook’s Horizon, a VR social space still in beta testing, released an update to prevent its blocking feature from creating ghosts. That might sound hyperbolic, but it is a perfectly apt description of the feature’s effect in Horizon prior to the update. In the earlier build, both the blocker and the blocked were made invisible to one another, but allowed to continue interacting with the same virtual world. While they couldn’t see one another, they could see each other’s effects on their shared environment. If someone blocked you, your obscene gestures might be invisible to them, but you could still move the furniture about and rattle chains – practically becoming a poltergeist. # ⚓ Proposed_Bill_Takes_Aim_at_Misinformation_on_Social_Media Platforms⠀⇛ Sen. We are hoping that CoE’s Parliamentary Committee (PACE), which is next in line to review the draft Protocol, will give us the opportunity to present and take our privacy and human rights concerns seriously as it formulates its opinion and recommendations before the CoE’s final body of approval, the Council of Ministers, decides the Protocol’s fate. According to the Terms of Reference for the preparation of the Draft Protocol, the Council of Ministers may consider inviting parties “other than member States of the Council of Europe to participate in this examination.” The CoE relies on committees to generate the core draft of treaty texts. In this instance, the CoE’s Cybercrime Committee (T-CY) Plenary negotiated and drafted the Protocol’s text with the assistance of a drafting group consisting of representatives of State Parties. The process, however, has been fraught with problems. To begin with, T-CY’s Terms of Reference for the drafting process drove a lengthy, non-inclusive procedure that relied on closed sessions (Article 4.3 T-CY Rules of Procedures). While the Terms of Reference allow the T-CY to invite individual subject matter experts on an ad hoc basis, key voices such as data protection authorities, civil society experts, and criminal defense lawyers were mostly sidelined. Instead, the process has been largely commandeered by law enforcement, prosecutors and public safety officials (see here, and here).  Earlier in the process, in April 2018, EFF, CIPPIC, EDRI and 90 civil society organizations from across the globe requested the COE Secretariat General provide more transparency and meaningful civil society participation as the treaty was being negotiated and drafted—and not just during the CoE’s annual and somewhat exclusive Octopus Conferences. However, since T-CY began its consultation process in July 2018, input from external stakeholders has been limited to Octopus Conference participation and some written comments.
