The king is always right. Right? Ask the courts. They would agree (the king appoints judges). Call it a legacy of Benoît_Battistelli, who had_inherited_the_strategy_from_his French_idol, who died so suddenly. Several months ago they did the same with the Saudi regime (old_tradition), just days apart from opportunistic pinkwashing. Call it the ‘Qatar effect’ of the patent world; the Unified Patent Court is basically celebrated by crooks and criminals. They know exactly what they’re doing; they know they undermine the law whilst at the same time advertising themselves as “legal professionals”. As noted in the video, António_Campinos is doing another photo op. The EPO has its very own “Pooh” (potty-mouthed kangaroo king): 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇I'm_the_F***ing_president_--EPO_President_Campinos⦈_ Imagine he was arrogant enough to literally approve this for publication today (considering all the other news about China): 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇Far vs Close: Annual bilateral meeting of EPO and CNIPA heads⦈ As noted in the video above, China isn’t even particularly strategic to the EPO. South Korea and Japan have historically been a lot more signficant, but they have a functioning democracy, unlike China and the EPO (and its latest arrival, Montenegro). █ Back to RSS and Blogs Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0 http://techrights.org/videos/back-to-blogging.webm Summary: There seems to be a growing and already-widespread realisation that Twitter sucks and some people rightly suggest that we pivot back into blogging (Twitter is often blamed for the demise of blogs) THE above video is a call for people to quit Social Control Media and use personal blogs instead (preferably in one’s own domain). We can ‘federate’ with RSS, just like we did two decades ago, and moreover it can be done reliably, simply in gemini://, either in addition to HTTP/s or on its own. “There are 2863 capsules,” Lupa_says_today. “We successfully connected recently to 2213 of them.” On average we see a growth of more than 2 capsules per day. That’s fantastic! The video above discusses the hours-old post_by_Zonker_(Dissociated_Press) and introduction_to_Teddit, which looks like another bloated piece of software. Gemini is a lot simpler to install and manage. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 364 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐃𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐘 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐒 ═════════════════════════════════════════════╕ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 11.28.22⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ Links_28/11/2022:_OpenRGB_0.8_and_Introduction_of_KIO_AFC⠀✐ Posted in News_Roundup at 8:26 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇GNOME bluefish⦈ § Contents⠀➾ * GNU/Linux o Audiocasts/Shows o Applications o Instructionals/Technical o Desktop_Environments/WMs # K_Desktop_Environment/KDE_SC/Qt # GNOME_Desktop/GTK * Distributions_and_Operating_Systems o SUSE/OpenSUSE o Red_Hat o Canonical/Ubuntu_Family o Devices/Embedded o Mobile_Systems/Mobile_Applications * Free,_Libre,_and_Open_Source_Software o Programming/Development * Leftovers o Civil_Rights/Policing * Gemini*_and_Gopher o Technical # Internet/Gemini * § GNU/Linux⠀➾ o § Audiocasts/Shows⠀➾ # ⚓ WordPress ☛ Episode_44:_Minors,_Majors,_and_Why_We_Have_So Many_Releases_–_WordPress_News⠀⇛ In the forty-fourth episode of the WordPress Briefing, our host Josepha Haden Chomphosy highlights the role of major and minor releases in the WordPress open source project. # ⚓ Video ☛ This_is_the_dumbest_way_Nintendo_has_tried_to police_the_Steam_Deck._(Plus_other_Deck_news.)_–_Invidious⠀⇛ From a new stable client update to Nintendo attacking their biggest fans, we talk about the biggest news in the Steam Deck world this last week… or 10 days. While these days, you can deploy servers preconfigured with a web service or run services in containers, installing the LAMP stack is classic. It may seem complicated at the beginning but it gives you a good way to test and practice your Linux knowledge. The best thing is that you don’t need a cloud server for that. You can install LAMP on your own computer to create a local development environment. In this guide, you’ll get a LAMP stack up and running on an Ubuntu 22.04 machine. At the end of this process, you will have a web server running with a MySQL database backend and the PHP programming language to write dynamic content. # ⚓ Linux Capable ☛ How_to_Install_Nginx_Mainline_on_Debian_11/ 10⠀⇛ For Debian users, the default repository for Nginx might not install the latest version. However, for most users, this is satisfactory, especially for Debian users that usually install the distribution due to its stability for the most part. Meanwhile, more often than not, users who seek performance and keep up with the latest security bug fixes would look at installing the Nginx mainline over the stable branch. Depending on your needs, one or the other might be a better choice for you. If you need the latest and greatest, go with the mainline. If you need a more stable release that’s been thoroughly tested, go with the stable version. In most cases, the stable version of Nginx will suffice. However, for those who need the newest features or more performance, installing the mainline version is recommended by Nginx. The following tutorial will cover installing Nginx mainline on Debian 11 or 10 Linux desktop or server utilizing the APT package manager with Nginx official APT repository. The warning came in Torvalds’s weekly kernel development update in which he announced release candidate 7 for Linux 6.1 and observed that – contrary to his predictions – the Thanksgiving holiday did not slow work on the kernel. “The end of the week was the usual ‘people send me their stuff on Friday’, and the weekend hardly slowed people down,” he wrote, before describing the work left on version 6.1 as “just a bit more than I’m comfortable with. It should just have slowed down more by now.” “As a result, I’m now pretty sure that this is going to be one of those ‘we’ll have an extra week and I’ll make an rc8′ releases,” he added, noting that one consequence of that decision is the two- week merge window during which developers submit code for the next cut of the kernel “will be solidly in the holiday season.” # ⚓ LWN ☛ Linux_6.1-rc7⠀⇛ Another week has gone by. It started quietly, and I was fairly sure that it being Thanksgiving week here in the US would mean that it would continue fairly quietly too. But I was wrong. The end of the week was the usual "people send me their stuff on Friday", and the weekend hardly slowed people down. And so the stats for this week look almost exactly the same as they did for the previous two weeks. And it's not just the statistics - everything feels very similar. There is really nothing here that makes me at all worried, except that it's just a bit more than I'm comfortable with. It should just have slowed down more by now. As a result, I'm now pretty sure that this is going to be one of those "we'll have an extra week and I'll make an rc8" releases. Which then in turn means that now the next merge window will be solidly in the holiday season. Whatever. It is what it is. Now, this means that I will be more hard-nosed than usual in the next merge window: the usual rule is that things that I get sent for the merge window should have been all ready _before_ the merge window opened. But with the merge window happening largely during the holiday season, I'll just be enforcing that pretty strictly. I want to see all that work in the pull requests having been done *before* the festivities, not while you're imbibing your egg-nog and just generally being stressed out about the season. If I get sent pull requests late, I'll just go "this can wait". Ok? Now, I suspect that everybody _else_ wants to get their work out before the holiday season starts too, so I hope that we're all in complete and violent agreement about this all. But I thought I'd start making people aware of this. Anyway, enough about the next release. Right now we're still in the last couple of weeks of this one, so let's make it count. Go test, and can we _please_ just start calming things down? Don't send me anything that isn't a clear and present bug. No more last- minute cleanups. Hear? Some essential services that run on Linux include system services such as syslog, process management, and cron. Network services such as domain name resolution, email, and file transfer are also essential. There are many ways to manage (start, restart, auto-start, stop, etc.) daemons on Linux systems. But it’s typically done using a service or process manager. Virtually all modern Linux machines employ the SystemD service manager by default. The project is described on its website as follows: Void is a general purpose operating system, based on the monolithic Linux kernel. Its package system allows you to quickly install, update and remove software; software is provided in binary packages or can be built directly from sources with the help of the XBPS source packages collection. Void is a rolling release distribution which features the fast XBPS package manager which can work with both binary and source-based software. The distribution uses the super lightweight runit init software for booting the system and managing services. Void is also unusual in that it provides multiple builds, based on different C libraries. A C library is a core component of the operating system. While most Linux distributions use the glibc library, Void offers both glibc and musl libc varieties for most supported architectures. Speaking of CPU architectures, Void provides 32-bit (x86), 64-bit (x86_64), and ARM builds of its distribution. Most of these builds are available in both muslc and glibc variants. I decided to focus on the x86_64 editions and selected glibc as I figured it would be more likely to work with a wide variety of software. At this point I could also choose whether to take a minimal Base edition or an edition with the Xfce desktop. I decided to take the desktop edition. The Base edition is 650MB in size while the Xfce edition is still relatively small by modern standards, weighing in at 983MB. Booting from the live media brings up a menu offering to run the distribution from the media or to load Void entirely into RAM to run from memory. While the source code and their own builds were available on release day, many of you have been waiting for Ardour 7 to come to Ubuntu’s repositories. That day has come. Ardour 7.1 will be landing in Ubuntu Lunar Lobster (future 23.04) and will be on Ubuntu Studio’s daily spins of Lunar Lobster very soon. Unfortunately, it is not possible to backport Ardour 7.1 into Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or 22.10, nor would we want to. This is because if we do, we might disrupt the workflow of people who are currently working with projects in 6.9 that are relying on its functionality and sound. Ardour 7.1 projects are not backwards compatible with Ardour 6.9 projects; once a 6.9 project is opened in 7.1, it is converted to a 7.1 project and cannot be used in 6.9 again unless restored from a backup. # ⚓ Grantlee_version_5.3.1_now available_|_Steveire’s_Blog⠀⇛ I’ve just made a new 5.3.1 release of Grantlee. But like Nóva and her fellow Hachydermians, these hobbyists were in fact experienced engineers; their “homebrew” was just them building for themselves, for fun. Yes, homebrew computing was fragmented and incoherent; the participants at the time were not possibly thinking that the machines that they developed would form the basis (for better and for ill!) for all future computing. But by the late 1970s, the time for radical decentralization of compute had indisputably arrived — and its spirit would burn so bright that it would endure long after the homebrew became commercial, as viscerally expressed in Apple’s iconic 1984 Superbowl ad. o ⚓ Jacobin Magazine ☛ Twitter_May_Be_Dying._It’s_Time_to_Build_Our Own_Social_Network.⠀⇛ All these issues are outlined very well in Richard Seymour’s excellent The Twittering Machine, and if the site does die, nobody will miss them. But, for the most part, until very recently, I enjoyed Twitter. I enjoyed its accessibility, the way that I could instantly ask or be asked all sorts of things. I learned a lot through it, and I met many lovely people. Years ago, when reading a well-meant account of the 2017 election that seemed oddly deficient, I realized what it was missing. Twitter — and the hysterical momentum of the campaign as it was expressed on there, with Corbynite accounts becoming ever more giddily euphoric as it became clear what was happening. Put simply, you’ll never understand the fact — and it is a fact — that Jeremy Corbyn came within a few thousand votes of being prime minister in June 2017 if you don’t understand the “Absolute Boy” meme. o ⚓ Alan Pope ☛ Find_Your_Twitter_Friends_on_Mastodon_–_Alan_Pope’s blog⠀⇛ Depending on who you speak to, Twitter is (or isn’t) in turmoil, and Mastodon is (or isn’t) here to supplant (or backup (or not)) the “de facto town square”. This is a memoir of a lost Europe, and how we lost it, in the First World War, during the run-up to the Second World War and finally during that war itself. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ I_Need_A_Hackation⠀⇛ In recent times, the “staycation” became a popular alternative to forays far afield: you could take time off and enjoy your local surroundings without having to get stamps in your passport. But I don’t need to go to a museum or visit an amusement park, much less catch up on Stranger Things. I’ve got a project burning in my brain, and what I need is a few days of good solid time in the basement workshop to make some headway. What I need is a Hackation. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Here’s_A_Plain_C/C++_Implementation_Of_AI_Speech Recognition,_So_Get_Hackin’⠀⇛ [Georgi Gerganov] recently shared a great resource for running high-quality AI-driven speech recognition in a plain C/C++ implementation on a variety of platforms. The automatic speech recognition (ASR) model is fully implemented using only two source files and requires no dependencies. As a result, the high-quality speech recognition doesn’t involve calling remote APIs, and can run locally on different devices in a fairly straightforward manner. The image above shows it running locally on an iPhone 13, but it can do more than that. o ⚓ 20_and_still_Scrobblin’_–_Last.fm_at_20:_Dissociated_Press⠀⇛ The first song I ever “scrobbled” was, apparently, “Outdoor Miner” by Wire. That was 2006, several years after Last.fm made its debut. This year the service turns 20, having never quite lived up to its promise after being acquired by CBS. In its prime, Last.fm tried its hand at being a social network and tried to make connections between people with similar listening habits. It’ll still show you the compatibility with other users, but has taken its foot off the gas in trying to foster conversations between users. The site offers a pro feature for $3 a month, but its perks aren’t very compelling. In fact, CBS’ tenure has been more marked by features removed, like its custom radio and streaming services. Instead Last.fm has tied itself to Spotify and quietly pokes users to sign up for the Pro account. (Has anyone subscribed to this? Seeing any value?) It seems to exist in kind of a limbo, still chugging along but doing very little to call attention to itself or offer a compelling reason for users to visit. Of course everybody knew they were for games, but what else were they good for? Plenty of use cases, some more contrived than others, were made up: Keep track of your recipes, give yourself an edge in school work, do your home accounts and write nice letters to grandma. Some products have been and are still marketed exclusively at either boys or girls, but I’m of the firm conviction that home computers aren’t one of them. It’s true that there were ads for home computers clearly directed at boys – but there were also plenty directed at girls, families and of course at nobody in particular – that is to say, at everyone. # ⚓ Jacobin Magazine ☛ Teachers_Are_Burned_Out._Unions_Can_Help Them_Understand_Why_—_and_That_They’re_Not_Alone.⠀⇛ With conditions in US schools now at a particularly brutal point, Jacobin’s Nora De La Cour spoke with Madeloni about how ordinary teachers’ union members can fight back. o § Hardware⠀➾ # ⚓ Hackaday ☛ I’ve_Got_Two_Turntables_And_A_Laser_Engraver⠀⇛ Digital media provides us with a lot of advantages. For something like recording and playing back music, digital copies don’t degrade, they can have arbitrarily high quality, and they can be played in a number of different ways including through digital streaming services. That being said, a number of people don’t feel like the digital experience is as faithful to the original sound as it could be and opt for analog methods instead. However, the archer first has to master “pulling the trigger.” He or she needs to perform a sequence of actions flawlessly to make an accurate shot even possible. A slight variation in body posture or a jerky string release is enough to make the arrow go off the mark. In comparison, pulling the trigger of a firearm requires less practice. Aiming is more difficult with a bow than with a firearm as well. Unless the target is very close, the archer needs to compensate for gravity and shoot the arrow in an arc – hence the word archery. 8 Because bullets travel much faster than arrows, a gunner can aim in a straight line, which is easier. # ⚓ France24 ☛ Al-Shabaab_militants_attack_hotel_in_the_Somali capital_Mogadishu⠀⇛ The hotel’s website describes the Villa Rose as the “most secure lodging arrangement in Mogadishu” with metal detectors and a high perimeter wall. Paper letters and cards let people in correctional facilities hold and touch an item that a loved one held, running their fingers over the handwriting, or smelling perfume on an envelope. In a recent article for the nonprofit outlet Truthout, Ryan Moser, who is currently serving a sentence in a Florida state prison, wrote about receiving a three-by-five glossy photograph of his father after he died unexpectedly. “I held [it] in my hands for hours, memorizing his features before placing it reverently in my photo album for safekeeping.” Increasingly, correctional systems are taking away those tangible ties to friends and family members. # ⚓ TruthOut ☛ New_Law_Expands_Recourse_for_Survivors_of_Sexual Assault_Behind_Bars_in_New_York⠀⇛ # ⚓ TruthOut ☛ Post_“Roe,”_Advocates_Fear_for_the_Future_of Contraceptive_Self-Determination⠀⇛ o § Monopolies⠀➾ # § Patents⠀➾ # ⚓ NBC ☛ New_Mexico_judge_and_her_pets_shot_dead_by_her husband_in_suspected_murder-suicide,_police_say⠀⇛ Albert was a judge in Los Ranchos Municipal Court. But it’s not a matter of a lot of questions and could be an unreliable privacy nightmare for players. The email below also demonstrates the manner in which at least one member of the women’s clique, Amaya Rodrigo, was trying to convince Ted’s date that Ted might be dangerous. This is a hideous example of backstabbing and sabotage. While this was 16 years ago, Debian hasn’t changed. We can see how easy it was to hoodwink developers with the false accusations that Jacob Appelbaum is a rapist. In 2018, at FOSDEM, the OSI president used her speech to promote a “whisper network”. Amaya’s email shows us what the “whisper network” really means, soul-destroying tactics deployed for purposes of wrecking a man’s personal life. NASA were early users of Linux and Linux, in turn, was fundamental to the first beowulf cluster. Beowulf clusters were essentially clusters created using commodity servers and high speed interconnect, instead of more traditional mainframes or supercomputers. The first such cluster was deployed at NASA, which went on to shape HPC as we know it today. It drove Linux adoption from then onwards in government and expanded well outside that sector into others as well as enterprises. HPC workload reliance on performance has driven a lot of development efforts in Linux, all focused heavily on driving down latency and increasing performance anywhere from networking to storage. o ⚓ Joe Brockmeier ☛ 100_day_blogging_challenge:_Let’s_get_those_RSS feeds_going_again:_Dissociated_Press⠀⇛ My Mastodon network is picking up nicely. In brief the language server protocol (LSP) is designed to abstract functionality that might be provided by an editor, or IDE, into a small “language server”. If the language-server knows how to jump to definitions, provide completion, etc, etc, then the editor doesn’t need to implement those things for NN different languages – it just needs to launch and communicate with something that does know how to do the job. * § Leftovers⠀➾ o § Security⠀➾ # ⚓ LWN ☛ Security_updates_for_Monday_[LWN.net]⠀⇛ Security updates have been issued by Debian (chromium, commons-configuration2, graphicsmagick, heimdal, inetutils, ini4j, jackson-databind, and varnish), Fedora (drupal7-i18n, grub2, kubernetes, and python-slixmpp), Mageia (botan, golang, kernel, kernel-linus, radare2/rizin, and xterm), Red Hat (krb5, varnish, and varnish:6), SUSE (busybox, chromium, erlang, exiv2, firefox, freerdp, ganglia- web, java-1_8_0-openj9, nodejs12, nodejs14, opera, pixman, python3, sudo, tiff, and xen), and Ubuntu (libice and shadow). # ⚓ Bruce Schneier ☛ Computer_Repair_Technicians_Are_Stealing Your_Data_–_Schneier_on_Security⠀⇛ A few notes. It found that privacy violations occurred at least 50 percent of the time, not surprisingly with female customers bearing the brunt. Researchers at University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, recovered logs from laptops after receiving overnight repairs from 12 commercial shops. The logs showed that technicians from six of the locations had accessed personal data and that two of those shops also copied data onto a personal device. Devices belonging to females were more likely to be snooped on, and that snooping tended to seek more sensitive data, including both sexually revealing and non-sexual pictures, documents, and financial information. [...] Half of the laptops were configured to appear as if they belonged to a male and the other half to a female. Their exposure to the IoT and the Internet makes them vulnerable to cyberattacks, which are reported to have drastically increased recently. So, businesses need to bolster their cloud security. Fortunately, this is something with which cybersecurity experts can help you. Data is now a major asset for most companies. Therefore, some companies can’t afford to have a data breach at any point. That said, here’s a guide on how businesses can strengthen their cloud and data security. * § Gemini* and Gopher⠀➾ o § Personal⠀➾ # ⚓ 🔤SpellBinding:_AHIZTUS_Wordo:_KULAK⠀⇛ o § Technical⠀➾ # ⚓ Salvaging_18650_cells_from_laptop_batteries⠀⇛ Lithium is a precious resource so it interests me and friends at la Bidouille to find ways to reuse dead laptops batteries. In particular I brought a laptop that got killed by spilling coffee on it back in 2014 even though it was only a few months old — absolutely un-solarpunk, I know, but at least it’s fun to disassemble it completely and research how to reuse its parts. [...] Reusing unhealthy cells can be problematic or outright dangerous in the long term so you should be a bit cautious and not blindly reuse the cells you managed to gather. [...] Our hackerspace had to move out of our place and we’ve been without a neat place to undermine our electrical safety for some weeks now, so I’m publishing this note even though the cells have been resting in a box instead of being used for something. I would like to try salvaging laptop speakers to make a portable speaker using one of those cells, and maybe a solar lamp. Stay tuned! =============================================================================== * Gemini_(Primer) links can be opened using Gemini_software.
