Music_Fans_Horrified_When_Their_Spotify_Tattoos_Stop Scanning⠀⇛ In fact, there's really no guarantee these tattoos will work even when they're freshly inked. As another woman told the WSJ, her Spotify tattoo that's supposed to play "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC never properly scanned, probably because the code doesn't have the Spotify logo next to it. Oops. o ⚓ Tedium ☛ When_Tools_Unlock_New_Paths⠀⇛ Finding new tools and having them work the way you expect is freeing, because it means that you’ve unlocked something in yourself that you didn’t think you had before. Being able to use Directus and Penpot has started to open up some fresh ideas in ways I was missing previously, and I really appreciate that. They make me see possibilities. Don’t just keep beating on a broken office chair, hoping for something to change. Find a new way to think, and eventually, the creativity will start flowing. o ⚓ Thorsten Ball ☛ It's_not_up_to_you⠀⇛ I keep thinking of this not because I’m constantly wondering whether I’m an asshole or not (I guess, uhm, leave a comment if you think I should?), but because the idea that some things aren’t up to you, but up to the judgement of everybody else is very powerful. I’ve seen it show up again and again. Here’s what I mean: [...] o ⚓ Manuel Moreale ☛ P&B:_Chris_Coyier⠀⇛ This is the 12th edition of People and Blogs, the series where I ask interesting people to talk about themselves and their blogs. Today we have Chris Coyier and his blog, chriscoyier.net. As many many others I got to knew Chris thanks to his CSS-Tricks and I'm very happy to see that he's not done blogging! Chris is also co-founder of CodePen and co-host of the ShopTalk podcast. o ⚓ Kev Quirk ☛ When_Was_the_Last_Time_Tech_Blew_Your_Mind?⠀⇛ Tech is great; it's one of the great loves of my life. It's constantly improving and there's always something new to learn, but when was the last time tech blew your mind? The first time I sent an email was really cool. The performance and battery life of my M1 Mac was (is) very impressive; far better than any laptop I've ever had before. But I'm not talking about impressive. I'm talking about the kind of impres o ⚓ Ruben Schade ☛ Forbidden_ais_kacang⠀⇛ I saw this_photo_by_Ivar_Leidus featured on Wikimedia Commons, and immediately thought of the Southeast_Asian desert. Prehnite is a crystal sillicate formed from calcium and aluminium, and not cendol. > o ⚓ New York Times ☛ David_Del_Tredici,_Who_Set_‘Alice’_to_Music, Dies_at_86⠀⇛ A Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, he was an experimentalist who redefined himself, becoming identified with a lush style called the New Romanticism. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Wandering_Through_Old_Word_Processors_Yields_A_Beast⠀⇛ The world once ran on hardcopy, and when the digital age started to bring new tools and ways of doing things, documents were ripe for change. Today, word processors and digital documents are so ubiquitous that they are hardly worth a thought, but that didn’t happen all at once. [Cathode Ray Dude] has a soft spot for old word processors and the journey they took over decades, and he walks through the Olivetti ETV 2700. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Restoring_The_Silver_Swan_Automaton⠀⇛ It’s easier than ever to build your own robot, but humans have been building automatons since before anyone had even thought of electronics. One beautiful example is the Silver Swan, built in the 18th century. o ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Bigfoot_Turns_Classic_Sewing_Machine_Into_A_Leather- Eating_Monster⠀⇛ If you try to sew leather on a standard consumer-grade machine, more often than not you’ll quickly learn its limits. Most machines are built for speed, and trying to get them to punch through heavy material at the low motor speeds often needed for leather work is a lesson in frustration. o § Science⠀➾ # ⚓ Omicron Limited ☛ Q&A:_Professor_discusses_new_approaches for_the_implementation_of_the_quantum_internet⠀⇛ Researchers around the world are working on a network which could connect quantum computers with one another over long distances. Now, this was once true, but if you look on 3M’s own website, you will see no mention of this legacy—it’s a firm that sells abrasive materials, adhesives, filters, films, personal protective equipment, and medical equipment. (Younger people, if they recognize 3M, it’s probably because of Post-it notes, or more recently their N95 masks, which is a weird legacy!) About 28 years ago this week, 3M got out of the data storage business in an announced spinoff of the asset to a new firm called Imation, a company that is still around today, with a much smaller profile. But even with that said, if you look around, people will frequently say that of the many makers of floppies out there, 3M made the best ones. Given that, I’m ultimately curious to figure out exactly why 3M became the most memorable brand in data storage during the formative days of computing, and with that, today’s Tedium honors the role 3M played in the computer revolution. o § Health/Nutrition/Agriculture⠀➾ # ⚓ TruthOut ☛ Insurance_Companies_Flout_State_Laws_Made_to Safeguard_Cancer_Treatment_Access⠀⇛ # ⚓ Techdirt ☛ Yet_Another_‘Social_Media_Trend’_That_Only_Went Viral_Because_Of_The_Media⠀⇛ We’ve done this a few times now where people start talking about a social media trend that actually only went viral because of the media coverage of the supposed (but not really) social media trend. EFF submitted a petition the UNGWAD in 2014, along with the Media Legal Defence Initiative.  The Working Group issued an opinion that Alaa’s detention was arbitrary and called for his release. In 2016, the UNWGAD declared Alaa's detention (and the law under which he was arrested) a violation of international law, and called for his release. This latest appeal comes after Alaa spent more than half of 2022 on a hunger strike in protest of his treatment in prison, which he started on the first day of Ramadan. A few days after the strike began, on April 11, Alaa’s family announced that he had become a British citizen through his mother. There was hope last year, following a groundswell of protests that began in the summer and extended to the COP27 conference, that the UK foreign secretary could secure his release, but so far, this has not happened. Alaa's hunger strike did result in improved prison conditions and family visitation rights, but only after it prompted protests and fifteen Nobel Prize laureates demanded his release.  # ⚓ France24 ☛ South_Korea:_Where_feminism_has_become_taboo⠀⇛ In this special edition, Annette Young heads to South Korea, which, despite its impressive economic record, consistently scores poorly for gender equality among advanced nations. Medtronic filed a pair of IPR petitions, asking the USPTO to cancel the claims. Although the PTAB granted the petitions, it eventually sided with the patentee — agreeing that one of the asserted references did not qualify as prior art.  On appeal, the Federal Circuit has affirmed. The real Gates, according to Schwab, remains a power-hungry, narcissistic control freak, and the sprawling Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is little more than a vehicle for him to accumulate and deploy influence on a far greater scale than he could as a mere billionaire software mogul. It is profoundly undemocratic and entrenches inequality, Schwab argues. Gates and his then-wife established their foundation around 2000 to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including public health, family planning, hunger and education. Armed with roughly $67 billion, the foundation is better equipped to attack disease and malnutrition than many governments. But the foundation doesn’t simply dole out Gates’s money to worthy causes, according to Schwab. Gates exerts control. One of the book’s most compelling sections is about the foundation’s support for family planning. Gates’s preferred method of contraception is a hormone implant that gets inserted into women’s arms and prevents pregnancy for up to five years. The foundation struck a deal with drug companies to encourage them to sell tens of millions of these implants at steep discounts. With the market flooded, health clinics in countries like Malawi and Uganda began resorting to “hard-sell tactics” to push women to accept implants that they didn’t want. Schwab describes it as a form of eugenics-inspired coercion. o § AstroTurf/Lobbying/Politics⠀➾ # ⚓ US News And World Report ☛ 2023-11-16_[Older]_TikTok_to Prohibit_Videos_Promoting_Bin_Laden's_'Letter_to_America'⠀⇛ # ⚓ Scheerpost ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_‘Free_Speech’_Fans_Call_for Censoring_TikTok_as_Chinese_Plot_to_Make_Israel_Look_Bad⠀⇛ # ⚓ Vox ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_The_lie_of_“deinfluencing”⠀⇛ # ⚓ Deutsche Welle ☛ 2023-11-13_[Older]_How_deportations_of Afghans_imperil_Pakistan's_security⠀⇛ # ⚓ Vox ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_How_I_stopped_buying_my_way_out_of everything⠀⇛ # ⚓ Vox ☛ 2023-11-15_[Older]_The_achievement_of_this_year’s Biden-Xi_summit_is,_simply,_the_meeting_itself⠀⇛ # ⚓ Green Party UK ☛ 2023-11-15_[Older]_Greens_welcome_Supreme Court_decision_on_deportations_to_Rwanda⠀⇛ # ⚓ Green Party UK ☛ 2023-11-13_[Older]_Green_Party_reaction_to Rishi_Sunak's_cabinet_reshuffle⠀⇛ # ⚓ ANF News ☛ 2023-11-12_[Older]_What_the_judicial_crisis_in Turkey_means⠀⇛ # § Misinformation/Disinformation/Propaganda⠀➾ # ⚓ International Business Times ☛ 2023-11-15_[Older]_UK Cybersecurity_Center_Warns_of_'Deepfakes'_Threat_to Next_Election⠀⇛ # ⚓ The Conversation ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_Should_the media_tell_you_when_they_use_AI_to_report_the_news? I first heard about Gandi, the French cloud service provider, after getting my Ubuntu Membership back in 2009. It turned out that the Ubuntu Membership came with a few perks. One of the perks, happned to be a generous discount rate at Gandi. I became a customer at Gandi, partly because of the discount, but also because I liked that they both funded and supported various non-profit organizations and open source projects, like Creative Commons, Gnome, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Students for Free Culture, World Wide Fund for Nature, International Federation for Human Rights, Ubuntu and Debian. They also used open source software themselves, at least for some of their services. And their services seemed to be good and reasonable priced as well. o § Monopolies⠀➾ # § Patents⠀➾ # ⚓ IP Kat ☛ 2023-11-13_[Older]_Defining_what_the invention_is_not_can_be_as_important_as_defining_what the_invention_is_(T_0273/22,_Chimeric_antibodies/ REGENERON) [Ed: Conflating patent monopoly with "invention"]⠀⇛ # § Trademarks⠀➾ # ⚓ IP Kat ☛ 2023-11-13_[Older]_The_difficulty_of protecting_olfactory_marks⠀⇛ # ⚓ IP Kat ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_[Guest_post]_Gilding_the lily:_The_shiny_challenge_of_registering_gold_soles_as trade_marks⠀⇛ # ⚓ IP Kat ☛ 2023-11-14_[Older]_“miababy”_and_“ia_BABY interapothek”:_Average_phonetic_similarity_doesn’t offset_low_visual_and_conceptual_similarity⠀⇛ # § Copyrights⠀➾ # ⚓ IP Kat ☛ 2023-11-10_[Older]_Brussels_event announcement_-_Technological_governance_at_the crossroads:_The_present_and_future_of_EU_copyright_law [Ed: Brussels is controlled by corporations, corrupt people, and the copyright maximalists' lobby.
