The decision didn't come out of nowhere; I had been thinking about it for years already and made up my mind in mid-2022. At the time I didn't even know about the_fraud, but suspicions grew around October and I started confronting the CEO about it. Days after I left I got some supportive messages and my wife noticed others were doing the same (even in other companies). They decided they were fed up with what they were doing. Or, in some cases, what they had gradually become subjected to. Sirius 'Open Source' was gradually_getting_worse_and_worse_each month. A few hours ago a French Gemlog published "I'm_going_to_work_full-time_on_free software" and to quote: I've been involved more and more with open-source and free software lately. I really enjoy the philosophy of my contributions being usable by everyone (and not only for the benefit of a single for- profit company). [...] After playing with the idea for a while, I finally informed my biggest customer that starting in January 2024 I will try to exclusively develop free software (which will more or less stop our cooperation). Doing Free software does not mean making no money. It's possible to do Free software and still live decently (maybe not with 3 cars parked in the garage as a "status symbol"). We're coping OK financially. We're healthier than before (no staying up all night anymore). This site is partly a development project, system administration tasks and writing/researching aside*. I expect to be doing it for another decade to come, probably a lot longer, having already done this for 17+ years. The sister site turns 19.5 just eight days from now [1, 2]. Its Gemini following has grown a lot and it helps separate GNU/Linux news from the issues we focus on here. Geminispace has enjoyed lots of attention from us. We justifiably devoted lots of time and effort to Gemini. Many sites fail to understand or to simply accept that the Web is a slowly-perishing platform (slowness or speed of demise in general is a lesser factor when considering the ultimate destination) and "eggs"_must_be_put_in_more_baskets. In the scientific community they say "evolve or die"; in academia they say "publish or perish". █ ____ * Saying "doing" versus "writing" misses the point that writing is also doing. Even documenting facts of technical steps is doing something important. Don't say_"can’t_write" or call it a "waste of time". Many coders spend a lot of time writing words, not code (tokens). Comprehension of code - or computer architecture further down the stack- is essential for such a task. ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡟⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢹⣿⣿⢹⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠀⠈⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡏⠸⠛⡻⠸⢛⣻⣿⠿⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⢿⣿⡿⠿⠿⣿⡇⣿⣿⣿⠏⠀⠀⠀⠸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⢀⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣷⢹⢸⣿⡇⢸⡄⢸⣿⣄⢸⣿⣿⢃⣾⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⡟⣡⣶⢸⡿⠡⢟⣡⣿⣷⢸⢡⣾⣿⡟⠰⢛⣠⣿⣇⣸⠟⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⡟⣸⢸⣿⠇⢸⡇⢸⣿⣿⢸⣿⡇⡾⢡⡆⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠈⢰⣿⣿⠀⡅⢸⣿⡿⢋⣿⡈⢸⣿⣯⡀⠐⠋⠀⠀⠋⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣈⣵⣿⣇⣩⣴⣸⣿⣸⣿⣿⣸⣿⣧⣴⣿⣧⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣤⣿⣿⣿⣀⣷⣜⣫⣴⣿⣿⣇⣼⣿⣿⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣀⣤⣾⣿⣻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣶⣿⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡏ ⠛⠿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇ ⣀⣀⣠⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠟⠛⠙⠛⠋⠉⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⠉⠈⠉⠉⠉⠁ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠟⠛⠋⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⢀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡛⠻⠉⠁⠀⠈⠉⠉⠛⠿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠟⠛⠛⠛⠉⠉⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠉⠉⠉⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣤⣄⣀⣀⣀⣀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣾⣵⣖⣊⣤⡤⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣤⣤⣾⣿⡿⠉⠁⠄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣠⣴⣶⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣶⣾⣷⣿⣿⣿⣥⣾⣟⠀⠀⠀⢻⣿⣿⣿⠿⠋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣠⣴⣮⣴⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠃ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣄⣀⣠⣤⣿⡿⠁⠀⠀⠀⢠⣿⢇⣀⣤⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡟⢀⣤⣶⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣧⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣠⡿⠟⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀ ⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠉⡉⠩⡩⣽⡏⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣯⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣽⣿⡆⠀⠀⠁⠀⠀⠍⠛⠿⠛⢁⣽⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠁⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠻⣿⣿⣿⣫⣶⣿⣿⣾⡆⠛⠇⡿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠙⢿⣿⣿⠟⠹⢻⢿⠿⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⣰⡰⡆⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⠸⢿⡿⠟⠛⠋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⡄⠀⣿⣿⣰⠤⠈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣼⣿⣿⠀⣿⡃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠈⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣠⡄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠉⠉⠙⢿⣿⠄⠀⣿⣿⠋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠚⠛⠋⠉⠀⠀⣿⡇⠀⣀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⢀⣠⣶⣿⠟⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⠃⠀⠀⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣯⣿⣿⠛⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡄⠀⠛⠁⠀⢀⣠⣤⣶⠖⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠉⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠛⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣀⡇⠀⣶⣾⣿⣿⣿⠛⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢲⢰⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 183 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://news.techrights.org/n/2023/12/02/Cybercrimes_and_Online_Abuse_From_Extremists_and_Militants_on_a.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/n/2023/12/02/Cybercrimes_and_Online_Abuse_From_Extremists_and_Militants_on_a.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Cybercrimes and Online Abuse From Extremists and Militants on a VPN/Tor⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Dec 02, 2023, updated Dec 02, 2023 A straitjacket or lobotomy won't solve this issue 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇All_about_an_old_fortress⦈_ THE following statement is a short statement about the deranged_militants who have been attacking us for over a year. Longtime readers are already familiar with the ringleaders, who weaponised crazies against people who criticise corporations that do awful things. It's an old political tactic with shorter history in our domain. Their attacks haven't stopped. They have nothing to left to lose, so they go further. We have substantial and clear evidence that Canadian and American (US) laws are now being flagrantly breached in an effort to make life harder for us. It's not the first time this is done (it has gone on for months already), and we moreover estimate that hours are being spent doing this. We'll keep the evidence private until a later date. We have interesting things to show on Monday (Forging IRC Logs and Impersonating Professors). The same people are shamelessly attacking women (not only my wife), slandering people, and much worse. They're doing this to other people too (for well over a decade already). Some of those other people spoke out and named the culprits. Do not be fooled by these culprits. Their camouflage is thin. They do not support Free software. They are just targeting the Free software community for "audience". Having been banned by Twitter for extremism, they prey on our IRC network and send abusive mail, including SPAM. And yes, British Police is fully informed of it, though it's not a high priority until (or unless) we file a lawsuit. The matter shall be escalated to the relevant authorities in due course (it's already weekend here). Until then, we shall stay productive. It seems clear that many of the things we publish strike a nerve. █ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣤⡀ updated Dec 02, 2023 Selling_Free_Software,_by_Richard_Stallman See licensing information at the bottom =============================================================================== Many people believe that the spirit of the GNU Project is that you should not charge money for distributing copies of software, or that you should charge as little as possible—just enough to cover the cost. This is a misunderstanding. Actually, we encourage people who redistribute free_software to charge as much as they wish or can. If a license does not permit users to make copies and sell them, it is a nonfree license. If this seems surprising to you, please read on. The word “free” has two legitimate general meanings; it can refer either to freedom or to price. When we speak of “free software,” we're talking about freedom, not price. (Think of “free speech,” not “free beer.”) Specifically, it means that a user is free to run the program, study and change the program, and redistribute the program with or without changes. Free programs are sometimes distributed gratis, and sometimes for a substantial price. Often the same program is available in both ways from different places. The program is free regardless of the price, because users have freedom in using it. Nonfree_programs are usually sold for a high price, but sometimes a store will give you a copy at no charge. That doesn't make it free software, though. Price or no price, the program is nonfree because its users are denied freedom. Since free software is not a matter of price, a low price doesn't make the software free, or even closer to free. So if you are redistributing copies of free software, you might as well charge a substantial fee and make some money. Redistributing free software is a good and legitimate activity; if you do it, you might as well make a profit from it. Free software is a community project, and everyone who depends on it ought to look for ways to contribute to building the community. For a distributor, the way to do this is to give a part of the profit to free software development projects or to the Free_Software Foundation. This way you can advance the world of free software. Distributing free software is an opportunity to raise funds for development. Don't waste it! In order to contribute funds, you need to have some extra. If you charge too low a fee, you won't have anything to spare to support development. § Will a higher distribution price hurt some users?⠀➾ People sometimes worry that a high distribution fee will put free software out of range for users who don't have a lot of money. With proprietary_software, a high price does exactly that—but free software is different. The difference is that free software naturally tends to spread around, and there are many ways to get it. Software hoarders try their damnedest to stop you from running a proprietary program without paying the standard price. If this price is high, that does make it hard for some users to use the program. With free software, users don't have to pay the distribution fee in order to use the software. They can copy the program from a friend who has a copy, or with the help of a friend who has network access. Or several users can join together, split the price of one CD-ROM, then each in turn can install the software. A high CD-ROM price is not a major obstacle when the software is free. § Will a higher distribution price discourage use of free software?⠀➾ Another common concern is for the popularity of free software. People think that a high price for distribution would reduce the number of users, or that a low price is likely to encourage users. This is true for proprietary software—but free software is different. With so many ways to get copies, the price of distribution service has less effect on popularity. In the long run, how many people use free software is determined mainly by how much free software can do, and how easy it is to use. Many users do not make freedom their priority; they may continue to use proprietary software if free software can't do all the jobs they want done. Thus, if we want to increase the number of users in the long run, we should above all develop more free software. The most direct way to do this is by writing needed free_software or manuals yourself. But if you do distribution rather than writing, the best way you can help is by raising funds for others to write them. § The term “selling software” can be confusing too⠀➾ Strictly speaking, “selling” means trading goods for money. Selling a copy of a free program is legitimate, and we encourage it. However, when people think of “selling_software,” they usually imagine doing it the way most companies do it: making the software proprietary rather than free. So unless you're going to draw distinctions carefully, the way this article does, we suggest it is better to avoid using the term “selling software” and choose some other wording instead. For example, you could say “distributing free software for a fee”—that is unambiguous. § High or low fees, and the GNU GPL⠀➾ Except for one special situation, the GNU_General_Public_License (GNU GPL) has no requirements about how much you can charge for distributing a copy of free software. You can charge nothing, a penny, a dollar, or a billion dollars. It's up to you, and the marketplace, so don't complain to us if nobody wants to pay a billion dollars for a copy. The one exception is in the case where binaries are distributed without the corresponding complete source code. Those who do this are required by the GNU GPL to provide source code on subsequent request. Without a limit on the fee for the source code, they would be able set a fee too large for anyone to pay—such as a billion dollars—and thus pretend to release source code while in truth concealing it. So in_this_case_we_have_to_limit_the_fee for source in order to ensure the user's freedom. In ordinary situations, however, there is no such justification for limiting distribution fees, so we do not limit them. Sometimes companies whose activities cross the line stated in the GNU GPL plead for permission, saying that they “won't charge money for the GNU software” or such like. That won't get them anywhere with us. Free software is about freedom, and enforcing the GPL is defending freedom. When we defend users' freedom, we are not distracted by side issues such as how much of a distribution fee is charged. Freedom is the issue, the whole issue, and the only issue. ===================================================================== Copyright © 1996-1998, 2001, 2007, 2015, 2021 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Seeing that Koch-funded sites (e.g. [1, 2]) rush to talk about the First Amendment in relation to a judge's decision against a TikTok ban, we ought to at least say something. The EFF, which was supposed to foster Free Speech (capitalised), called this "Victory". Maybe not entirely shocking though; the "free speech" people at the EFF don't grasp this concept, they_view_it_similarly_to_Elon_Musk. We've written a great deal about TikTok. We also mentioned this about 20-30 times earlier today in IRC (see the_scrollback). But to avoid repetition and to keep the argument concise, one must remember what TikTok is and what it does. Not what it says it does but what it does, in practice, strive to accomplish. TikTok does not embrace free speech. TikTok comes from a country that does not recognise this concept. TikTok actively undermines free speech and does many other negative things. To claim that TikTok being allowed to carry on with its weaponised influence operations constitutes a "VICTORY!" (to quote the EFF) is to challenge the very mission of the EFF. Shame on the EFF and shame on "deregulation"-centric Koch-funded sites. The ruling is an own goal for the United States. Other countries should not take this 'precedent' and instead assess Montana’s legislation as a blueprint. If TikTok was made by and controlled by Iran, and the same thing happened, would the EFF issue a similar press release? █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 738 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at https://news.techrights.org/n/2023/12/02/Over_at_Tux_Machines.shtml Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/n/2023/12/02/Over_at_Tux_Machines.gmi ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Over at Tux Machines...⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ posted by Roy Schestowitz on Dec 02, 2023 ⚓ Updated This Past Day⠀⇛ 1. ⚓ 32+_Years_Ago_Richard_Stallman_Said_the_Free_Software_Movement_Was Doomed_Because_of_Software_Patents⠀⇛ Richard Stallman Thought GNU/Linux Was Doomed Due to Software Patents 2. ⚓ Audiocasts/Shows:_pfSense_Makes_no_Sense,_Cyber|Show_on_Fixing_The System⠀⇛ 2 episodes 3. ⚓ KDE_Plasma_6_Desktop_Environment_Is_Now_Available_for_Public_Beta Testing⠀⇛ The KDE Project released today the first beta version of the upcoming KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment for public testing three weeks after the alpha development milestone. 4. ⚓ This_week_in_KDE:_the_Plasma_6_feature_freeze_approaches⠀⇛ At this point nearly all the planned features for Plasma 6 are done ⚓ New⠀⇛ 5. ⚓ Today_in_Techrights⠀⇛ Some of the latest articles 6. ⚓ Fourteen_new_GNU_Release_and_Free_Software_Directory_Meeting_This Coming_Friday⠀⇛ Some GNU news 7. ⚓ Advocating_a_better_Kernel_Integration_for_all⠀⇛ The testing ecosystem in the Linux kernel has been steadily growing, but are efforts sufficiently coordinated? 8. ⚓ Distributions:_Comparing_Options,_Distributions_Devroom_at_FOSDEM_2024, and_Development_of_EasyOS⠀⇛ 3 news picks 9. ⚓ Canonical/Ubuntu:_Hardware,_Ubuntu_Summit_2023,_and_Switching Workspaces⠀⇛ Some Ubuntu-centric news and such 10. ⚓ Inkscape_1.3.2_solves_data_loss_bug_in_previous_release⠀⇛ data loss bug in 1.3.1 11. ⚓ today's_howtos⠀⇛ many for this Saturday 12. ⚓ Android_Leftovers⠀⇛ Big Android feature drop adds some cool new Wear OS and smart home tricks 13. ⚓ today's_leftovers⠀⇛ 4 links for now 14. ⚓ Proxmox_Backup_Server_3.1_Brings_Secure_Boot_Compatibility⠀⇛ Based on Debian 12.2 “Bookworm,” Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 ships with secure boot and local sync jobs support 15. ⚓ BSD:_Upgrade_to_FreeBSD_14.0_and_Hosting_a_Gopher_Hole_on_a_Raspberry Pi_4_via_FreeBSD_14_and_Gophernicus⠀⇛ Some BSD adventures 16. ⚓ Programming_Leftovers⠀⇛ Python, Perl, and more 17. ⚓ Microsoft_Windows_TCO_(Breaches_and_Espionage,_Sabotage)⠀⇛ Best of Windows TCO 18. ⚓ Red_Hat_Leftovers,_Mostly_Corporate_Puff_Pieces⠀⇛ Not much left except their fluff this year 19. ⚓ today's_leftovers⠀⇛ 3 more links 20. ⚓ Free,_Libre,_and_Open_Source_Software:_Job_Prospects,_RETVec,_dnsdbq, Teleport_Adopts_AGPLv3⠀⇛ 4 FOSS links 21. ⚓ Open_Hardware:_Arduino_and_More⠀⇛ half about Arduino 22. ⚓ Raspberry_Pi_Projects_and_Stories⠀⇛ 4 for today 23. ⚓ ASRock_Challenger_ITX_Intel_Arc_A380_Graphics_Card⠀⇛ Intel Arc on Linux, Ubuntu 24. ⚓ Applications:_Free,_Proprietary,_and_Openwashed⠀⇛ Misc. news about software 25. ⚓ Games:_Control,_Roots_of_Pacha,_Steam_Deck,_and_More⠀⇛ mostly stories by Liam Dawe 26. ⚓ Cinnamon_6_and_the_beta_of_KDE_6_both_arrive_at_once⠀⇛ The overlap is just a coincidence, and the two projects have differing approaches to versioning. Black consumers are significantly less likely than total consumers to use refillable water bottles and drink tap water… marketing messages around taste/flavor may resonate strongly with Black consumers. Water brands can steal Black and Hispanic consumers from the sports drink market.” The leading bottled water firms have faced substantial criticism for focusing their marketing on these communities, as well as immigrants from nations where tap water may not be safe or reliable. Thus, the social groups who on average can least afford to pay for a constant supply of bottled water are precisely those who tend to trust their tap water the least, who are targeted by the industry’s advertising, and who spend the highest percentage of household income to buy packaged water. # ⚓ Federal News Network ☛ ‘Telework_is_not_one-size-fits-all’: Agencies_defend_hybrid_work_for_feds_in_front_of_House lawmakers⠀⇛ A hearing Wednesday of the Oversight committee’s subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce came after months of pressure from Republican members who have repeatedly called on agencies to share more granular data on telework and productivity of federal employees. # ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Michigan_Becomes_First_State_to_Register People_to_Vote_as_They_Leave_Prison⠀⇛ Today, Michigan became the first state to automatically register people to vote as they leave prison.
