Boycott Novell ist eine Webseite, die ins Leben gerufen wurde, nachdem Novell ein Patentabkommen mit Microsoft, einem missbräuchlichen Monopol, unterzeichnet hatte. Dieses Abkommen wurde von Novell gezielt angesteuert und resultierte in:

• Einer FUD-Kampagne (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt – Furcht, Unsicherheit und Zweifel), die sich gegen Nutzer und Distributoren von GNU/Linux richtet. Dies ähnelt dem Vorgehen von SCO.
• Darauf folgenden Patentabkommen um GNU/Linux, z.B. Linspire, Xandros und TurboLinux
• Patentklagen gegen Linux (z.B. FAT/TomTom)
• Microsofts Verwässerung des Begriffs „Open Source“
• Werbung für „Interoperabilität“ zu Lasten internationaler Standards wie ODF
• Eindringen von Microsofts patentbelasteter Software in GNU/Linux (z.B. Mono und Moonlight), was Verbindlichkeiten nach sich zieht und Microsoft als De-facto-Standard befördert
