Sadly, MS was cunning enough to keep their patent extortion semi-covered, until Barnes and Noble piped up on the patents that MS was waving. However, Apple has been arrogant enough to assume that, just because they can successfully game and abuse a broken system to obtain issued patents, then the world will just roll over. Apple has now publicized how badly the USPTO is failing in its basic duties. By being so arrogant, abusive, and evil, Apple has drawn attention just how bad the situation is. And, as another benefit, since Apple lives and dies on marketing image rather than performance, this isn’t going to help their bottom line.
