Video and eBook DRM is a challenge that can be defeated, still.

Apple’s DRM makes it difficult for gnu/linux users to use iPod and that is a barrier to complete migration. HypePhone is less a barrier because it is more of a stand alone device, but Apple’s uncooperative nature makes things more difficult than they need to be. Apple’s pattent aggression is a more serious threat because it will prevent the emergence of free software friendly devices.

We know that Microsoft tried to cooperate with Apple to carve up the market in the past. Apple publically rejected several offers dealing with media, such as quick time. We should expect the offers they accepted to be less well advertised.

That both Apple and Microsoft are backed into the patent corner is good news. This shows that their lock on desktop software is no longer as powerful as it once was. The rise of cheap, portable computing is a boon to free software and we should expect the failure of digital restrictions along with the failure of its main proponents.
